Poem featured in the book[]
Across the Winkie Peaks he came
This startling man who had no name
A wicker basket and his silken balloon
Something we couldn't see too soon
Winds they blew and blew again
Tossing the basket there to then
The fluffy clouds prevented entry
The sharpest peak, the sharpest sentry
Yet balloon and man came tumbling down
To grace our fair land, to claim his crown
I am a Wizard, your Wizard, he cried!
My magic will transform all of your lives
In awe we watched as he announced his creeds
Agreed we tended to all the Wizard's needs:
Materials, architects, monkeys, and more
Whatever he needed we had in store
His magic mixed with all our souls
Building wondrous stuff to fulfill our goals
Spires, palaces, towers, and towneries
His magical thinking knew no boundaries
From Winkie country he procured our tin
From Gillikin mines he shipped emeralds in
In Munchkinland he made a stand
By Quadling Country he took command
"King Pastorius is gone! But in his place...
My magic will reign, let me make my case,
I'm not your emperor nor your king
But watch me do so many things,
Before too long, our city gleams
Grander and greener than all our dreams!"
Monuments went up all over the land
The Wonderful Wizard made good on his plan
With pleasure and glee he cast his spell
In a city of gems, life's pretty swell
Its shine, its lustre, its welcome glow
Bring folks from far to see its show
But only those who are great and true
Will get to meet him, the numbers few,
But the chance of it is quite exciting
That Emerald Palace, it's so inviting!
But is that so and so and true
That the man himself is born anew
His magnificent palace, his big green door
Steeped in all that majestic lore
He has his soldiers, a monkey team
His eyes they sparkle like in a dream
Should you get a greenish invitation
Take it up with no sense of hesitation
The Wizard of Oz, great and good
'Tis he who makes us believe we should
In any picture there has to be
Some problem or dilemma for you to see
It's a sort of test to prove the pudding
The most idealist world can stand improving
So all of Oz, lands wide and far
Know of this witch, the clear sky's scar
From somewhere else she seemed to form
Of wickedness, a green swirling storm
Her broom flies bewitched by trickery
Scaring young Oz kids won't give her victory
Ozians must unite under the Wizard's gaze
The courage of you all, it will amaze
From Munchkin to Gillikin
They must do their part
Quadlings and Winkies must fight with heart
So watch the skies and report the witch
Protect your children and sharpen your pitch
She's wicked and terrible you all must see
But together we'll defeat her with victory
Once she is gone, and done her malice
Be ready to celebrate at the Wizard's palace
