Wicked is a two-part epic musical fantasy film franchise based on the Wicked stage musical by Winnie Holzman and Stephen Schwartz, which was inspired by the 1995 book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire and the 1900 classic The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum and its 1939 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer movie version. The films are directed by Jon M. Chu and written by Holzman and Schwartz.
The films feature Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande in the lead roles, along with Michelle Yeoh, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Marissa Bode, and Jeff Goldblum in supporting roles. The films tell the story of Elphaba Thropp, a woman with green skin, who becomes the Wicked Witch of the West, and her friendship and rivalry with Glinda Upland, who becomes Glinda the Good. The films are set in the Land of Oz before and after Dorothy Gale arrives from Kansas.
The films were announced by Universal Pictures in 2012, with Marc Platt as a producer. Both films faced a long development and multiple delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, until Chu was hired to direct, and Erivo and Grande were cast in 2021. The films started shooting in December 2022 in England, but was halted the next summer until November 2023 because of the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Both films finished shooting in January 2024.
Wicked: Part One will be released on November 22, 2024, and Wicked: Part Two will be released on November 21, 2025.
