Night Fury. Speed unknown. Size unknown. The unholy offspring of lightning and death itself. Never engage the dragon. Your only chance: Hide and pray it does not find you.
―Hiccup reading about Toothless' species in the dragon manual.

Toothless is the deuteragonist of DreamWorks Animation's How to Train Your Dragon franchise. He was the last Night Fury, the rarest and most intelligent species of dragon that lived peacefully until they were hunted to near-extinction, leaving Toothless the last one of his kind, also befriending the young viking named Hiccup who unnecessarily shot him down, but got help from him to have the abilities to fly once again and becoming his companion and best friend.

Background[]

Toothless was born and raised on an unknown island 15 years before the events of the first film with his two Night fury parents, along with any siblings he might have had. They've lived peacefully until the ruthless dragon killer Grimmel the Grisly came and hunted down every Night Fury, including Toothless' parents and siblings. Toothless managed to escape Grimmel which left him as the sole survivor of his species. Due to losing his friends and family, Toothless moved to Dragon Island along with a bunch of other dragons such as Deadly Nadders, Gronckles, Hideous Zipplebacks, Monstrous Nightmares, and Terrible Terrors.

He lived in the Dragons' Nest on Dragon Island along with all the other dragons that would raid Berk to hunt food for a colossal Red Death dragon living deep within a volcano out of fear of being her food, since then he has become infamous across Berk as the most feared of the dragons where killing him was seen as the ultimate prize.

Sometime before the first film, Toothless encountered a Whispering Death, with whom he started a conflict with. During one of their battles, the Night Fury injured the dragon by biting on its side, leaving a bite mark. Even though the two dragons eventually parted ways, both of them held a grudge against each other for several years.

History[]

How to Train Your Dragon[]

During one of the dragon raids around Berk, Toothless destroys several of Berk's catapult towers, until he is unexpectedly shot down by the son of the Chief Hiccup, in an attempt to prove himself to his dad & the rest of the village, resulting in his left tail-fin being sliced off and crashing into the woods where he sliced a tree in-half during his fall, knocking him out. The next day, Toothless is found by Hiccup who was trying to find where he is, but when the boy is about to kill him, the dragon looks at him directly in his eyes which ultimately doesn't make Hiccup kill him but instead free him from the ropes, but once he's freed Toothless pounces on him & roars at him loudly, also choosing to spare Hiccup before flying out of sight.

Unfortunately without his left tail fin, Toothless is unable to fly properly and he ends up being trapped in a cove where he would once again come across with a now-curious Hiccup, where he sees that the boy is actually beginning to learn more about him & dragons in general, although initially enraged at the treatment he receives at first, Toothless' curiosity of the human gets the better of him and he soon begins to learn more about Hiccup. After Toothless lets the Viking touch him for the first time and also fit him with a mechanical tail fin Hiccup built for him, he grows very close to the boy shortly after. He enjoys spending time with Hiccup so much that he even allows him to fly on his back, seemingly in sync with one another's movements.

While Toothless is bonding with him, Hiccup has been using his knowledge of the behavior of dragons as part of his dragon-fight training, which makes him quite popular among his peers & the rest of the village, it even gets him the respect of his father Stoick. Eventually, after successfully passing his latest dragon test, with his father watching him this time, Hiccup is chosen by the village elder to be the one who will actually kill a dragon as part of his final exam, however unwilling to do it, Hiccup plans with Toothless to leave Berk to avoid taking the exam.

Little did Hiccup know that he unknowingly lead Astrid, a girl he has a crush on but had grown jealous due to his progress, into the cove and begins threatening him, when Toothless sees this, he shows his protective side by assuming that she is a threat, only through Hiccup's words does he manage to calm down enough, although still being wary. When Astrid threatens to tell the village, Toothless abducts her and strands her on a tree to stop her even though Hiccup invites her to a flight to show Toothless is not dangerous, the Night Fury is not convinced and pulls off daring acrobatic moves (corkscrews, loop-de-loops, etc.), not to throw her off, but just to terrify her, after she apologizes, Toothless begins to trust her more and assumes she is now a friend, smoothing out his flight.

Unfortunately, now that he's able to fly again, Toothless is now in the range of the Red Death's link to him and he is forced to fly back to her nest with Hiccup & Astrid along with him, but since he doesn't have any food and that he doesn't want to lose his new human companions, Toothless hides behind a stone pillar to avoid the Red Death from spotting him. Toothless & the human duo then witness in horror as the Red Death eats a Gronkle whose offering she finds unsatisfying, unfortunately the Red Death spots him with Hiccup & Astrid and tries to eat them, fortunately the trio are able to escape the mountain in time & they fly back to Berk.

The next day, Toothless senses another threat when he manages to hear Hiccup screaming from afar, realizing he is in danger, Toothless manages to claw his way out of the cove (for the first time on his own) and immediately rushes to Hiccup's side to protect him from the dragon he is supposed to kill . He refuses to leave his human side when the Vikings eventually get in on the fight and gang up on him, managing to fight them off and have Stoick at the mercy of his flames. Only when Hiccup screams at him to stop does he let his guard down long enough to be captured.

After learning that he can be used to find the nest, Toothless is chained up and used a compass to reach the Dragon's Nest, however, after the Vikings break open the mountain he observes the other dragons flying away, realizing what's about to happen, he begins desperately trying to free himself as the Red Death suddenly bursts out of the mountain of the Nest & begins burning down the ships. The ship he is chained to is set alight, but just as he thinks he's done for, Hiccup, Astrid & their peers arrive at the scene riding other dragons to rescue him, when he is thrown into the water Hiccup dives in & tries to save him but can't hold his breath for long, Stoick, however, saves both of them and Toothless takes on the larger dragon with Hiccup by his side.

With Hiccup by his side, Toothless leads the Red Death high above into the dark clouds so he can blend in & try to take down the Red Death, unfortunately, the giant dragon's body is still proven to durable and their attacks only enrage the beast enough to shoot fire on all directions which set his prosthetic tail on fire. Diving down fast with the dragon right on their tail, just before she can set fire to them, Toothless is able to fire a blast inside it's mouth which causes the dragon to burn up in the inside & explode on impact, but when Hiccup falls off of him, Toothless' bond with Hiccup is shown to be very strong indeed and bravely dives into the exploding body of the Red Death to save his human friend, wrapping Hiccup in his wings to protect him as they crash, saving (most of) his body & even getting Stoick's trust and respect, to the point where he even lets him stay in his house.

Sometime later, Toothless is overjoyed when Hiccup finally wakes from his coma from the battle, licking him in the face playfully like a pet would, knocking all sorts of things over while jumping around Hiccup's home happily, and helps him to walk with his new prosthetic leg as a sign of their friendship. As an even bigger surprise for Hiccup, Toothless' friendship with him is enough proof for Stoick to let the village live in peace with dragons, and he even gains a new tail fin at the end of the film, given to him by the blacksmith Gobber, and takes off into the skies with Hiccup once again, now knowing they can now live in a new era of peace with each other.

Gift of the Night Fury[]

Sometime later, Toothless prepares to celebrate his first Snoggletog, an annual holiday the Berkians celebrate, with Hiccup and the rest of the tribe, but the rest of the dragons leave Berk to give birth to Babies all while he is his unable to due to his inability to fly on his own. Though when Hiccup gives him a special prosthetic that allows him to do so, he immediately flies to meet up with the rest of the dragons in the hopes of meeting other members of his species.

Sadly, when he arrives at the nesting grounds, Toothless is unable to find any other Night Furies just like him, he flies all over the island trying to find at least one but to no avail. However, when he sees Hiccup bring all the dragons & newborns back to Berk, Toothless decides to return the favor by finding him his missing helmet, arriving in the great hall right on time to show it to Hiccup which causes him to hug his dragon in thanks.

The next day, Toothless gives another surprise for Hiccup by dragging out his old tail fin and saddle in anticipation of their flight, and when Hiccup protests that he has his new automatic tail, Toothless proceeds to smash it into the ground and fling it away and nudges the saddle towards Hiccup, leaving his friend in awe that the dragon would rather fly with him or not at all. With that settled, Toothless & Hiccup happily fly across the island in celebration

Dragons: Riders of Berk[]

Sometime after the Snoggletog celebration, Toothless along with Hiccup eventually begin to help the villagers adapt to the new life of Berk by starting the very first dragon riding academy with Astrid & their peers along for the ride. But it was during this time that he & Hiccup constantly clash with the grumpy old Viking Mildew who refuses to accept the changes happening around Berk & constantly tries to find an excuse to kick the dragons out.

While all this is happening, the Whispering Death Toothless hates returns to Berk to settle the score with him, but although Toothless tries to assure Hiccup he can take him on, his inability to fly solo gives him a severe disadvantage & it eventually forces him to fly out into the woods alone to confront him but he is cornered into a canyon & he is nearly killed. Fortunately, Hiccup arrives just in time and Toothless eventually accepts his help & the wild dragon is overpowered, but just as Toothless prepares to kill the Whispering Death to end their rivalry once and for all, Hiccup stopped Toothless, and the Night Fury allows the Whispering Death to flee in defeat.

Eventually, Mildew is able to get enough villagers on his side to force Stoick to kick the dragons out of Berk and he is forced to stay on dragon island with the other dragons for the meantime, but immediately afterwards a tribe of marauders appropriately named the Outcasts led by Stoick's old pal-turned-rival Alvin attack Berk. Toothless learns that Alvin heard of Hiccup's feats where he "conquered" dragons & wants his help, which the boy does so to protect the village, but following his orders Toothless evades capture from Alvin & shows him their skill together, & with the reinforcements from their allies, they are able to get away from the outcasts & once again be welcomed back to Berk, but this unfortunately sparks an interest in Alvin who wants to learn Hiccup's training methods with the thought of riding dragons as well.

Sometime after this, Toothless & Hiccup encounter a young girl they rescued from a shipwreck named Heather, who they take under their wing (which brings out Astrid's jealous side) and teach them how to fly dragons, unbeknownst to them, Heather was being blackmailed to steal the book of dragons, a manual written by famed viking Bork the Bold on everything they know about dragons, by Alvin so she can save her captive parents, taking Astrid's dragon Stormfly along with her. Determined to get it back, Hiccup leads the others on an attack, but are soon overwhelmed by Alvin's forces, but fortunately they are saved in the last-minute by Astrid & Heather & they both claim the book & rescue Heather's parents before escaping, but their victory immediately makes Alvin change his efforts from capturing the book to capturing them instead.

After a while of wacky misadventures, Toothless & Hiccup get into a problem that has colossal needs of fixing fast when the thorston twins get into an argument & split, leaving their two-headed dragon roaming around the forest, but it's come at a very bad time because Berk's annual signing of a peace-treaty with a tribe of ferocious warriors fittingly called the Berserkers has arrived, but what's worse is that the original-but-reasonable chief Oswald has gone missing and his completely insane son Dagur has taken his place. Dagur claims that hearing Hiccup's dragon training is seen as a violation of the peace-treaty & forces Stoick to take him on a tour & hope he gets to kill a dragon, otherwise he will spark a war between the tribes, thinking quickly, Hiccup is able to get the twins to reconcile with each other but not before their dragon is captured and taken back to the arena so Dagur can kill them, fortunately, following Hiccup's calling-sounds Toothless is able to get the twins dragons to flee & get Dagur to consider the treaty signed, but the sight of seeing a night fury up-close for the first sparks a big interests in Dagur.

Eventually, Toothless learns from Hiccup that he found a map to an island that claims to be the home of Night Furies & flies there in hopes of meeting more of them, but when they get there they eventually discovered that having had enough of Berk disrespecting him, Mildew sides with Alvin & planted that map to lure him & Toothless there. Afterwards Toothless is completely pinned down & is made as bait for Hiccup if he doesn't do what Alvin does, fortunately, he & Hiccup are rescued by the others & they all return home safely, with Toothless being assured by Hiccup that being one of a kind isn't all bad.

Dragons: Defenders of Berk[]

Sometime later, Toothless & the others take their riders to dragon island and stay in a cave for the night as part of a test to better hone their survival skills, however still very scared for Hiccup, Toothless sneaks out of the cave to find him to make sure he's safe. Unfortunately, Toothless discovers that Dagur has also come to the island to hunt dragons & initially wants Hiccup to join him on the hunt where they eventually find Toothless, this act eventually forces Hiccup to reveal to Dagur that the rumors of them now training dragons he heard to be true & they successfully fight him off, but this act would be the very reason for Dagur to break the peace treaty with their tribe & his.

A little while later, Toothless & Hiccup discover a dragon frozen in an iceberg and they bring it in an ice-cube back to berk in an attempt to train it, unfortunately, Hiccup discovers to late that the dragon is actually a Skrill: a lightning dragon that's been Toothless' species longtime rival, as well as the the symbol of the Berserker tribe, which Stoick says that they need to get rid of now because Dagur getting the Skrill is the right excuse for him to go to war. Unfortunately, the riders Hiccup has guarding the Skrill (namely all the reckless ones) foolishly melt the ice cube & with it's ability to store in extra lightning to allow itself stay alive in ice for decades, the dragon attacks them all & flies away, with Stoick explain that the reason it's the symbol for the Berserkers is because of their ability to train them & use them as weapons (which he didn't think was real until he saw his son train a Night Fury) which forces Toothless & the others to fly after it, eventually they corner it at outcast island where they see it has been captured by the outcast themselves.

Sneaking into the outcast's arena to free the Skrill, Toothless & Hiccup learn that Dagur & Alvin seemingly making an alliance to conquer Berk together, but when they see Dagur taking the Skrill behind Alvin's back, they witness their enemies fight for the Skrill that ultimately ends with Dagur seemingly kill Alvin & taking control of the outcasts. Using this as the right opportunity to strike, Toothless & Hiccup goad Dagur into chasing them & they ultimately succeed in getting Dagur to lose his grip on the Dragon & trapping the Skrill in another iceberg, however, this defeat would lead a furious Dagur to switch his efforts to capture Toothless & make him the new symbol of the Berserkers.

Sometime later, Toothless & the others are surprised to see Alvin is still alive, but are even more surprised to see that he wants to make amends with them & wants to help them stop Dagur, though they all assume it's a big rouse & instead lock him in prison. However, they see that he genuinely wants to help when Dagur attacks the academy & knocks all the dragons out, but although they manage to stop them, Dagur captures Stoick & threatens Hiccup that he'll kill him unless he hands Toothless over to him.

With Alvin by their side, Toothless & Hiccup sneak into Outcast island in an attempt to break Stoick out, but they (except Alvin who manages to escape) are unfortunately captured & Toothless is put in a cage where Dagur soon plans on making him respect him & make him be by his side as he conquers the rest of the archipelago. Fortunately, Alvin returns with reinforcements where Toothless fights Dagur for his freedom where he ultimately wins, however, the battle accidentally awakens a bunch of whispering deaths & the deadliest among them being a mutated version of their species the screaming death but fortunately he and Hiccup reunite & together, they defeat them all and the day ends with Stoick & Alvin reconciling & ushering another era of peace between Berk & the outcasts.

Dawn of the Dragon Racers[]

Sometime later after defeating the Berserkers, Toothless watches Hiccup & the others prepare for the annual regatta race just as Stoick leaves for business & puts Hiccup in charge of things while he's away. He originally helps Hiccup in rounding up the runaway sheep, but the others quickly turn it into a game they dubbed "Dragon Racing" which catches the excitement of the other villagers who have slightly grown bored of the regatta.

Although Hiccup tries his best to keep the tradition of boat racing alive, Toothless & even Stoick (who found the idea to be quite amazing) convinces him to go along with this new tradition and he & Hiccup eventually win the first official race between Snotlout and the twins, leading to a brand new sport that would be prove to be quite popular.

Dragons: Race to the Edge[]

3 years later Toothless, now 18 years old, sees that Hiccup is having an existential crisis because everyone of their friends (especially Astrid) now have places in Berk & he doesn't, fortunately, he & his partner get a chance to spring into action when he learns from Berk's number 1 trader Johann that Dagur has escaped from prison & stole his boat to prepare for revenge against them. Gathering the gang to capture him, Toothless & the other dragons follow Dagur's trail to the infamous Ship graveyard where they find that he's getting gold hidden on a ship named the Reaper to rebuild his armada, it's also on the ship that he & Hiccup find a strange-looking telescope in the hands of a skeleton, but by daybreak, they find that Dagur has captured their friends & he is forced to let him go & Hiccup gives him the telescope, but not before Dagur launches a boulder on the Reaper which causes it to sink with their friends still onboard & locked-up.

Fortunately, Toothless & Hiccup successfully free their friends & grab the Telescope from Dagur's hands, after returning to Berk, Hiccup tries to get the Telescope, which he dubs the Dragon Eye, to work, but sees that it needs a tooth from a dragon called a Snow Wraith for it to work. With help from the village elder Gothi, Toothless & Hiccup are able to get the tooth they need but are still unable to figure out how it works, but when Toothless lights a fire with the Dragon eye in front of it, it shows maps beyond the archipelago which makes Hiccup utter "This changes... everything" when he sees this.

With Stoick's blessing & promising to keep his son safe, Toothless & their gang leave Berk into the great beyond to look for new dragons & hopefully follow Dagur & stop whatever he's doing, after evading capture from a singing dragon & other deadly things, Toothless & the the gang stop by a perfect island to make camp. After initially a tough start, Toothless & the rest make the perfect spot for them to stay with Hiccup naming the island "Dragon's Edge" along with getting new dragon neighbors with a pack they call Night Terrors especially their alpha Smidvarg & Tuffnut even a non-dragon pet in the form a chicken he calls Chicken.

Sometime later, Toothless & Hiccup once again reunite with Heather after she befriends a young steel dragon the dragon eye calls a Razorwhip she named Windshear, although she wants her to stay with them in Dragon's edge, he learns from Johann that Dagur killed her adoptive family & is out for revenge. Fortunately, Hiccup is able to convince her to stay for a while but sees that a horn she's had since she was a baby has his dad's crest on it & when he & Toothless ask him about it, they learn & reveal to Heather that Oswald (Dagur's dad) is her father, thus making him her brother, after escaping, they decide to let her go off alone to think some things.

Eventually, Toothless, Hiccup & the rest get into another war with a ruthless organization Dagur teams up with who appropriately call themselves the Dragon Hunters with their supposed leader Ryker Grimborn vowing to capture all of them, especially Toothless due to him being a Night Fury, with them specifically learning that they have the Dragon Eye & vow to get it because it's been a part of their tribe for years. Later on, after learning that the hunters are heading to the Snow Wraith's island to get it's tooth once they get the dragon eye, Toothless & Hiccup along with the others race to stop him from getting it & capture Ryker with some hidden help from Heather, who pretended to join Dagur to get closer to him, but ultimately fail, though he & the others learn from Astrid that Ryker is really the 2nd-in-command & their real leader is the latter's brother Viggo, who Heather's planning to draw him out in the open.

Eventually, Toothless gets a rematch with the frozen Skrill when a lightning storm forms around it's icy prison that allows him to escape & he flies to outcast island before attacking Berk for revenge, when Toothless & Hiccup see this, they attempt to once again seal it inside the ice, but he realizes this trap & attempts to seal them instead, but they escape in time before being chased around across the ocean, after resting up in an abandoned shipwreck, Toothless learns Hiccup plans to lead the Skrill to the Hunters so they can deal with it. Unfortunately, Dagur is on the ship they pass by and he successfully recaptures the Skrill, realizing the mistake his rider made, Toothless aids the others in making a bold rescue-attempt to free him, which is ultimately successful, though when they decide to put it back into iceberg, they realize that if they do so then they will be know better than the hunters & decide to let it free, which is enough to earn the Skrill's gratitude & gaining newfound respect for Toothless before riding the the next lightning bolt in the sky & somewhere else.

After a while of fighting-off the Dragon hunters & freeing the dragons they capture, Toothless joins Hiccup, Astrid, and Stormfly on another mission with Heather when she reveals that she & Windshear are going on a hunting mission with Viggo to hunt a rare dragon called a Flightmare in an attempt to capture him. Unfortunately, Viggo proves to be to smart of a foe to face & he easily outsmarts them which ultimately ends with him capturing the Flightmare & figuring out that Heather isn't a hunter & captures her too before disappearing into the mist.

Though determined to save both her & the Flightmare, Toothless & Hiccup fly to the Dragon Hunter base to save them, however, Hiccup makes the mistake of Viggo threatening to steal the Dragon Eye when they leave the edge too seriously and he brings the Dragon Eye with them, which is exactly what Viggo expected him & he freezes him & Toothless in place and he takes the Dragon Eye. Even though they manage to set themselves free along with Heather, Windshear, and the Flightmare, Viggo manages to escape with the Dragon Eye which infuriates Hiccup, unfortunately for them, just before they freed the Flightmare, Viggo used it's glow to allow himself to access the eye without a key, now ready to hunt & sell every dragon he can find, & Toothless is the greatest prize.

A few months after the "Viggo episode", Toothless & Hiccup try to talk Hiccup out of going on a recon flight alone in search of a hunter ship so they can reveal where Viggo & the Dragon Eye are which he ultimately fails at doing, but when they land a ship where it's crew are seemingly knocked out, they reveal themselves to not be so & Toothless is shot with Dragon Root arrows that sends him crashing into a deserted island with Hiccup with him. After a while of evading some of the Hunters while staying hidden in a cave, he & Hiccup get an unexpected rescue in the form of Dagur, whose support of his tribe & his family convinced him to ditch the Hunters, & when Hiccup gets himself captured, Toothless willingly lets Dagur ride him & they free Hiccup before the pair fly off while Dagur sails off into another way.

A little while later, Toothless & the others learn from Fishlegs that he's been writing to Heather ever since the Viggo incident, prompting Hiccup to invite her over to stay at the Edge for awhile before they all agree to let her stay permanently. Though at first Windshear is unable to work with the other dragons, Fishlegs is able to integrate her into their pack by letting her fly on his dragon while Windshear firmly protects her, which is proven to be enough of a reason for Heather & Windshear to stay at the edge.

Sometime afterwards, Hiccup & Toothless are captured and taken to an arena where a buyer from the hunters keeps them as his prisoners, while Hiccup is remaining in his cell, he is made the new competitor for his show of dragon fighting, with the crowds really eager to watch him because he's a Night Fury. After winning his 1st fight, Toothless is pitted the next day to fight the game's defending champion: another strike-class dragon with three tails that's fittingly named a Triple Stryke, whose ferocious attacks forces Toothless to go into his wild-state, but when he attempts to go for the killing blow he ultimately doesn't do so just as the other riders arrive to free both him & Hiccup, after destroying the arena, Toothless is able to convince the Triple Stryke, who Tuffnut quickly names Sleuther, to come back with them to the edge to be free for the first time in his life.

Later on, while preparing for an ambush on one of Viggo's shipyards, Toothless & Hiccup once again meet Dagur, who says that while he's searching for his sister (who Hiccup & the others promised to her she'd remain hidden), he feels like he needs a dragon to cover more ground. Though still highly suspicious of him, Hiccup gives him a less-dangerous gronkle he calls Shattermaster for him to train, though eventually they see Dagur really has changed for them when he and Shattermaster willingly take on the shipment lot but he seemingly dies in the process.

Sometime later, Toothless & Hiccup learn from Johann that one of Viggo's dragon-trading auctions where the richest warlords will be attending is happening soon & Hiccup is determined to disrupt it so he doesn't get more money, but knowing him & Ryker would recognize him on the spot, he opts to have Snotlout (the least-likely candidate to pull it off) disguise himself to keep him distracted & has his father give him all of Berk's gold with Gobber coming along with them to make sure Viggo believe he's rich. Unfortunately, Viggo proves Hiccup wrong again when he sees through Snotlout's disguise and captures all of them and has their dragon's become part of the auction, with Toothless being the last & most valuable prize which has the attendees bidding like crazy but he's ultimately sold to Viggo's special guest, fortunately, Toothless is rescued when Gobber befriends a dragon whose species are the only ones capable of biting through dragon-proof steel & he is freed by Hiccup, but when they fly after Viggo to get Berk's gold, he gets the last laugh when he tricks them into diving after a chest with rocks in it so he can get away, effectively leaving Berk without gold.

A little while after the auction & several victories over the hunters', Toothless flies Hiccup to a remote island filled with blue oleander, flowers that dragons are allergic to, for a meeting with Viggo, where he shows Hiccup a map with a red line on it & Viggo explains his terms of a truce with the riders: if the riders stay on their side of a line according to a map he has, he & his empire will stay on theirs and will "never" bother them or hunt any dragon on their side as well, which he proves to Hiccup by signing his signature on it, though Hiccup believes that Viggo knows something they don't & believes it has something to do with what's on his of the map, prompting Toothless to fly him & the others to the island on their side that's closest to Viggo's. Flying to the island, Toothless & his fellow dragons are treated quite well by the islanders who call themselves the Defenders of the Wing & they worship their kind, but they plan on executing their riders when they believe they work with Viggo (who they also despise), though Hiccup is quite confident he can show their queen Mala they're not hunters 'cause he thinks this is the reason why Viggo wanted them away by training dragons in the den they're gonna be eaten, but when the dragons in the den are ones he can't train, Toothless flies down to rescue him, which is slightly enough to prove Mala was wrong about him, touring around the village, the riders are introduced to a dragon named an Eruptodon, a lava-eating dragon that keeps their island safe, unfortunately when they discover that the Eruptodon is gone, Hiccup discovers that Viggo was really using them as a distraction so his hunters can steal it, tearing up Mala's hope in trusting them & preparing to kill them again, this time she'll do it herself.

Just before Mala could kill Hiccup, he promises that he & Toothless along with their fellow riders will help them get the Eruptodon back while he leaves some of his riders will stay behind & help her people slow it down, which is something she does. Following the directions of a hunter that was left behind, Toothless flies Hiccup to where Viggo is with the others & Mala right behind them, while flying, Hiccup realizes that Viggo's plan for the Eruptodon (who at this point is really hungry for lava) is to have it cause the dormant volcano in Dragon's edge to erupt & destroy it, fortunately, Hiccup is able to stop & feed the dragon in time, which finally earns him Mala's trust & they forge an alliance with each other.

Sometime after gaining the trust of the Defenders of the Wing, Toothless discovers to his shock that Viggo placed a bounty on Hiccup's head & shows it to his rider (while the others deduce he's going to pay it with Berk's gold) & co., but while everyone suggests he lay low, Hiccup doesn't want to because it's Berk's 400th anniversary & he doesn't wanna alarm his father about it because he still doesn't wanna tell him about the gold incident. Unfortunately, after a night of putting on a spectacular air-show, Toothless finds out Hiccup got captured, which prompts the riders and Stoick to fly off and find him, following the directions of Mala's second-in-command Throk and another one of the Bounty Hunters, Toothless & the others fly to sleipnir island and rescue Hiccup in time.

Later on, when learning from Mala about how dangerous the Black Markets have become but also becoming weary of a stranger who helped them, Toothless flies Hiccup their to investigate with Heather & Windshear coming along, after disguising themselves as Defenders of the Wing soldiers, Toothless & co. shockingly discover that the stranger is a very-much alive Dagur who is seemingly working for the Hunters when they confront him. However, when they capture him, they discover that he's only doing it because the Hunters have captured Shattermaster and is only working for them to get him back, once they see proof about it, Toothless and the others proceed to free him and the rest of the dragons he is captured with before Dagur departs with them to keep the hunters that are chasing them distracted so they can free, promising them they'll meet each other again soon.

A while later, though they were able to get more victories over the hunters, things take a turn for bad luck when Hiccup learns that no trading ships have come to Berk in weeks, & when Toothless flies him & the others to the trade straits, they make a terrifying discovery that the straits have been occupied by a giant tidal-class dragon capable of making powerful whirlpools (ones whose vortexes are capable of snatching dragon when flying) called a Submaripper, but are even more surprised that it's actually been chained up by Viggo as a warning Hiccup to back off on his business. Fortunately, Fishlegs is able to come up with a way to melt the dragon-proof chains around the Submaripper & Toothless helps them build a device that will allow his rider to stay underwater long enough for him to melt away all the chains & free the Submaripper, who happily returns the favor to him by bringing him up for air just in time.

However not long after getting the trade lines back on the Midnight Sun: the time when the whole archipelago will have daytime for 2 straight weeks, kicks in & Toothless is forced to ensure a completely sleep-depraved Hiccup from doing anything crazy. Which pretty much happens when Hiccup gets both of them in a chase with a pack of hostile dragons & makes Toothless force him to sleep with the others before sleeping too.

Shortly afterwards, Toothless & the others get another unexpected visit from Dagur who not only tells them that he's on a rescue mission to find his & Heather's dad Oswald, but also that he knows the island where Viggo hides all the gold he's got, Berk's gold being among them. When they successfully find it, Heather is convinced to join Dagur in his quest to find their dad & heads out with him, bidding farewell to them as they fly off.

Sometime later, while trying their best to train Sleuther, a freak lightning-storm hits that spooks all the other dragons except Toothless (much to Snotlout's annoyance) and they all fly off into the woods, but when Astrid went to free them she looks directly at a stray bolt that leaves her blinded, forcing him & Hiccup to stay with her while they find her dragon. Unfortunately Sleuther got himself stuck in the mix but with Astrid's quick-thinking despite her blindness, they are able to gain his trust & afterwards, heal Astrid of her blindness, & as a bonus, Toothless watches on as Hiccup & Astrid officially admit their romantic feelings for each other that have been built-up ever since he was introduced to her, kiss for real & officially begin their romantic relationship, something which he happily supports.

Not long after Hiccup & Astrid officially become a couple, Toothless & Hiccup along with all their allies mount-up for a full-scale assault on the Dragon hunter base, but once they finally arrive, they frustratingly find no one their, but their frustrations soon turn into a surprise when they find a metal bunker with a gravely injured Viggo inside it, he explains his injuries is because having had enough of his insufferable genius attitude along with all the constant losses they had, Ryker had betrayed him & officially takes control of the hunters with a simple-but-dangerous plan to wipe out them & all of their allies with a secret weapon he's been building that the twins discovered named Project Shellfire, though they think this is part of his plan & trap him in the defenders of the wing prison even with him promising the dragon eye. However, Toothless & the others quickly see that Viggo in fact wasn't lying when sudden giant fireballs begin raining from the skies & Toothless can't find where they're coming from just as Viggo escapes, regrouping back on the edge, Hiccup & Astrid immediately assume that Ryker plans on striking Outcast island & he flies Hiccup there, but they are sidetracked when Ryker fakes a surrendering to them that allows his men to attack their Berserker allies, following where the blasts are coming from, Toothless & Hiccup make a horrifying discovery that Project Shellfire is a giant dragon-proof warship... that's latched to a colossal Tidal-class dragon called a Shellfire & he's unable to follow it underwater, out of fear of Ryker attacking the edge with the dragon with no way to stop it, Toothless & Hiccup reluctantly lets Viggo help them, which he proves to them by showing that he does indeed have the dragon eye.

With a very-distrustful ally now on their side and a newborn baby Eruptodon in their aid because Hiccup had promised Mala to protect until the crisis has come to an end, Toothless and the other prepare the edge for Ryker's attack to stop him here before he sets his sights on Berk, by morning when the hunters attack, Toothless waits out the Shellfire's first attack before heading out to take out the ships protecting and breaking away the ship that's on the Shellfire's back, but are unable to get close and the Shellfire's constant blasts end up awakening the volcano on the island, which forces him & Hiccup to let Viggo fly with them. Though when it looked like he was gonna literally stab Hiccup in the back with a dagger, Viggo proves them wrong when he willingly drops it into the ocean, which riles up the same Submaripper his rider saved to come to the surface & battle the Shellfire as their respective are archenemies, eventually the Submaripper is able to break the warship off the dragon's back & swallows it with Ryker still onboard which makes the Shellfire swim away, but once that was finished Viggo (who Toothless placed down) takes Astrid hostage on-top of the volcano & demands Hiccup return the Dragon Eye to him or Astrid pay the price, but Hiccup proves him wrong when his love for Astrid becomes stronger & he throws the dragon eye into the volcano & when Viggo tries to catch it, the ledge he's on cracks apart and it causes him to fall inside, seemingly dying in the process.

In the weeks following the deaths of the Grimborn brothers and the defeat of the hunters, Toothless accompanies Hiccup & the others to a very special celebration with the Defenders of the wing when the old Eruptodon is coming very close to dying and they bid him farewell as it flies to Vanaheim: a fabled island where dragons go to rest in peace, but despite not feeling dead yet, Toothless unfortunately flies to Vanaheim much earlier than expected when the Twins foolishly follow the Eruptodon there. Upon arriving on Vanaheim & rounding-up the twins, Toothless sadly discovers that not one of his species made it there & learns that the others can't fly out of there because of the dragons that guard the place, but when Hiccup sees they can't smell a specific type of fruit, he and the others cover themselves with it & successfully escape, afterwards Toothless begins watching with curiosity as Hiccup continues building something he's been working on for a while.

A little while later, Toothless and Stormfly accompany their respective riders (whose newfound relationship is slightly driving Snotlout crazy) on a little trip to an island Johann advised them to go for one last thing he needs for the project he's been working on. Unfortunately when they get back, not only do they learn that the same man who almost bought him during the last auction, whose name is Krogan, has taken over the Dragon hunters, but had also decided to use their own tactics against them (in a more brutal way) and spent the last few days rounding up a bunch of powerful stoker-class dragons known as Singetails due to their ability to shoot fire from not only from their mouths, but also from their bellies and tails, for his most-skilled men (him among them) to ride on, forcing them to flee the edge & back to Berk, though fortunately Fishlegs is able to save Hiccup's plans as well as find out what he's been building: a replacement dragon eye for them to use.

After spending a long time being hunted down by Krogan's men all across the ocean, Toothless manages to fly Hiccup & the others all the way back to Berk to warn Stoick of the new dangers, who assures Hiccup it's alright that they've come back and has the village prepare for war against them. Though unwilling to harm the forced Singetails, Hiccup has Toothless fly them to a storehouse island where they first encountered the Singetail species & observe one to try & figure out what sort of weaknesses they have so he can free the captured ones, but once it's behavior proves to be useless, Toothless tries to talk Hiccup out of befriending, which causes it to go feral & pushes Toothless far way before chasing Hiccup.

After being flung away, Toothless soon gets into a fight with one of the Singetails, fortunately Hiccup was rescued by the storehouse's manager & Snotlout's father Spitelout who shows him the several weaknesses of the Singetails and after rescuing Toothless, Hiccup comes up with a plan to take back the edge & free the Singetails. However, once the duo return to Berk, they learn that his dad is leading an attack on dragon's edge which forces Hiccup to execute his plan sooner than expected, with Spitelout's help, Toothless & Hiccup are able to free all the Singetails & take back the edge, though the only downside is that they learn that not only did Krogan escape, but that Viggo survived his fall into the volcano & still has the still-functioning dragon eye, the only downside for Viggo is that lava scarred half-of-his face when attempted to retrieve the Dragon Eye the first time.

A little while later after fully returning the Edge back into full-scale living condition, Toothless & Hiccup are approached by Dagur to help him convince Heather to stop finding their father once he realizes he's nowhere to be found on the locations on the journals he left behind, but the duo soon decide to join the search when they discover one of Oswald's journals has drawings about Vanaheim & theorize that he's been there the whole time. With Fishlegs in-tow, Toothless & Hiccup lead Dagur to Vanaheim where they discover that the entire island is formed around the skeletal remains of a really colossal dragon (said by Hiccup to be even bigger than the Red Death), & after traveling down it's mouth & fighting off a pack of hostile dragons, find a hut with the Berserker symbol... only to sadly find that Oswald is indeed dead which leaves Dagur devastated but Hiccup assures him that he would've still loved him, after chasing away the dragons they encountered earlier, the Vanaheim guardians show newfound respect for them & they let them fly back peacefully, having taken most of Oswald's notes with them.

After flying back to Berserker island to tell Heather the sad news, Toothless & the others are told by one of Dagur's men that Heather has gone with Johann because he heard someone "met" Oswald, but knowing it's an obvious trap prompts them to get to the markets fast. Though they are successful in rescuing them, they discover that Heather had a dragon eye lens with her the whole time & Krogan and his men take it.

After Heather flies to Vanaheim with Astrid to say goodbye to her father herself, Toothless proceeds to come along with Hiccup & Johann along with the Twins back to the Northern Markets for the final parts he needs for the Dragon eye to work: the gemstones, while also bringing along the dragon eye lenses on Johann's suggestion, but when hunter's take Johann hostage & demand he give them the lenses, Toothless swoops in and saves them. But afterwards Toothless is told by Hiccup to stay behind while he & Johann go underground for the last gemstone, but he really gave him a signal to follow them quietly because when taking the twins rant about a traitor among them, Toothless waits & shows up right on time when Hiccup discovers that Johann is the traitor they were thinking of, but they also learn that before escaping him that he's the real leader of the hunters & has been planning there demise for years.

But before they escape from his sights, Toothless & Hiccup learn that Johann's reason for needing the lenses is because he needs at-least 5 of them, the first lens his men stole from Heather, to use so the dragon eye can show him the location of the most feared & powerful beast to ever roam the archipelago: the King of Dragons, a colossal beast with the ability to use it's mind to control other dragons, and Johann plans to use the beast to attract all the dragons in the world to him & sell them to get even richer than ever before. Now knowing Johann's true colors and the hunter's brand-new overall endgame goal, Toothless & Hiccup along with all their allies race against Johann's empire as they travel around every deserted island in the archipelago one-by-one to find all 5 lenses first so they can find the King of Dragons' lair & move him somewhere safe so that Johann or anyone else that's got other maniacal plans for world domination & intends to make the beast a part of it.

Eventually, Toothless & Hiccup soon get another call where they quickly see that it's a trap set by Viggo, but this time he's called them because he needs their help because Krogan & Johann believe he outlived his usefulness and left him to die in a cave when he was given a misguided location on the last lens Johann needs, when Hiccup denies to do it, Viggo reveals he "poisoned" Toothless with a flower & he'll give him the cure unless they help him, which Hiccup does so & they go along with his plan of stealing back both the Dragon Eye & all the lenses from Johann that will make him & Krogan turn on each other, because Toothless & Hiccup learn from Viggo that Krogan is really working for a man up north & he ordered Krogan to pretend to follow Johann so he can deliver the King of Dragons to him once it's been discovered. With a tamed Skrill that was done by Viggo by their side, because Skrill's are the Singetails only predator, Toothless & Hiccup sneak into Johann's stronghold while Viggo & the Skrill kept his men busy, but they are unable to find any of the lenses & Viggo is gravely wounded, but is fortunately told that the flower he ate is harmless to dragon because Viggo only wanted them to think that not just because he knew it's the only way to get him to cooperate, but because he grew to respecting dragonkind especially because he revealed that it was a dragon who saved him from the cave, he them willingly sacrifices himself with the Skrill backing him up that allows Toothless & Hiccup to escape.

Unfortunately, their race for the King of Dragons is briefly put on-hold when Toothless & the others hear that Stoick had been ambushed while on patrol & Hiccup is being tasked with taking his place as acting-chief. But he sees that Hiccup is blaming himself for what happened to him & pretty much says he thinks it wouldn't have happened if he hadn't shot down Toothless, but when he then goes by the cliffside to think, Toothless assures him that he's made peace with the event that brought them together before Astrid begins to make him think what would've happened if different things happened the night Toothless was shot down:

In Astrid's revision of the events of the first film, Hiccup simply misses Toothless when he shoots his bola at him, & he simply flies away from Berk with both his tailfins still in one piece, Toothless would then go on to live the next 3 years as a completely normal dragon that's still feared among the people of the archipelago, with some notable differences being that he is implied to have been somehow freed from the Red Death's control & he would still go on to have more battles with his Whispering Death-nemesis, it's also been implied that he spent those 3 years trying to find more of his species all over the archipelago, but he was ultimately unsuccessful in finding them & spent those years being alone & without a mate. But that would all change when one night he stopped by the same cove he would've crashed in if his tail-fin was gone for a simple drink, when all of a sudden he would be attacked by (also with both his legs still fine) Hiccup, who spent the last 3 years still remaining to be seen as "Stoick's little embarrassment" & is eventually forced to somehow kill a dragon to prove to be called a viking, but the net he tried to capture Toothless with falls in front of him but he's still captured regardless, but much like in the film, Hiccup couldn't bring himself to kill him & he frees him which makes Toothless also let him go, but just before they go their separate ways the Whispering Death appears & begins attacking him, but Hiccup accidentally hops on his back & they are soon chased around by the Whispering Death all around the island, but when they lead it back to the cove, the Whispering Death blasts Toothless' tail that burns away his left tail fin & he ends up crashing, but when Hiccup's attempt to distract the dragon only resulted in his leg being burned off, Toothless is so touched by this & boldly shields both himself & Hiccup from the dragon's attack before being saved by Stoick & Gobber, & after showing him he saved (most of) his son, Stoick thanks him for it & welcomes both of them as heroes that still sets up the new Berk society that is today.

After hearing Astrid's revision of the events of the first film, Hiccup's fighting spirit is thankfully restored & he returns to his father's bed to hope he can pull through his injuries with Toothless by his, but immediately after that they find that the riders have found another injured ally in the form of Heather. She warns them that she was ambushed by Johann's men when she was visiting her father's grave despite all her efforts to ensure she wasn't followed, and with Stoick's blessing & Alvin and his men taking care of Berk, Toothless & the others fly to Vanaheim to stop Johann from messing it up.

Upon reaching Vanaheim, Toothless and a few others fly off the scare away the rest of Johann's men still heading to Vanaheim while he leaves the rest to interrogate an abandoned enemy on why Johann wants with Vanaheim. After stopping on the men coming to Vanaheim, Toothless & Hiccup learn that Oswald discovered the giant skeleton that forms Vanaheim is the same species as the King of Dragons, but are fortunate to find that he also uncovered a dragon eye lens, the last lens they need to find out the island where the King of Dragons is discovered and currently living in.

With all the lenses needed to find the King of Dragons, Toothless lights the dragon II where they discover that the King of Dragons is (seemingly) a Titan Wing version of the parrot of dragonkind (because of it's ability to copy the fire blast of other dragons) known as the Dramillion, but then Spitelout arrives & tells him that due to Stoick still not being healed yet, Hiccup is voted acting chief and is forced to return to Berk immediately, but Hiccup realizes that being chief means he can make his own decisions & he prepares Toothless to stop Johann & Krogan from getting the King of Dragons, with Astrid & the others (Spitelout included) coming along. Flying to the island the Dragon Eye II led them, Toothless and the riders soon engage in a battle with Johann & Krogan's forces when the former manages to acquire the final lens they need to find the King of Dragons from an unexpected source and they eventually manage to force the "King of Dragons" out of hiding, but despite their best efforts, Toothless and the others are unable to stop them from knocking the dragon out & taking it, but by nightfall just as they believe that all hope of stopping Johann from conquering the world is lost, they find the beaten-up Dramillion floating in the ocean & take it to the Defenders of the Wing to heal him, while there, Fishlegs realizes that the Dramillion isn't the King of Dragons because it doesn't do any of the things Oswald wrote down much less on why Johann would leave it to die, but once realizing what they're doing & thankful for being saved by them, the Titan Wing Dramillion releases his own fire & when Hiccup shines the Dragon Eye II through it, it changes the map which makes Fishlegs realize that the Titan Wing Dramillion's fire is last thing needed to reveal the real King of Dragons & where it lives: Berserker Island.

Realizing that Johann & Krogan must have figured this out before they did and are probably headed there right now, Toothless and the others fly to the island just in time to aid Dagur & Heather in fighting-off the invaders, while taking a breather, Hiccup manages to deduce that the King of Dragons is located directly underneath the island and has been using it's mind-control abilities to force other dragons to leave it alone (which Toothless felt firsthand during his first official visit to Berserker Island), at that moment Johann launches his second and biggest wave of attack yet, but just as Hiccup is about to lead the counterattack, Astrid believes that Johann & Krogan are already on the island and are probably on their way to the King of Dragons right now & encourages him & Toothless to stop them, one good-luck kiss later & Toothless & Hiccup journey into the underside of Berserker Island to save the King of Dragons. Racing to the nest where the King of Dragons is under the island, Toothless & Hiccup are unfortunately separated by a cave-in which forces Toothless to try and find another way into the nest, but after finding no other way inside, Toothless simply blasts away the rubble, by the time he arrived Hiccup had discovered that the King of Dragons is actually a female and had seemingly recently laid an egg & during a fight with Johann and Krogan had fallen of a cliff with Johann almost about to kill him, but while he was distracted Krogan had taken the egg with him & rushed out of the cave, but while determined to save his rider Hiccup assures him he'll be alright & with (along with sarcastic urging from Johann) that settled he races off to save the egg, taking a shortcut he discovered, Toothless boldly confronts Krogan just as he makes it out of the cave with the egg still with him, but just before he pinches the Night Fury on his weak spot found in his neck, Toothless saw it coming & swiftly dodged it & knocked Krogan away with his tail before taking the egg with him & saving Hiccup from falling, right after the King of Dragons saved him from Johann by completely freezing the madman in place that effectively kills him and by the time he & Hiccup come back their allies had successfully & completely wiped out all of Johann's forces with the help from all the available dragons that was called by the King of Dragons, as for Krogan, despite escaping, he was forcefully taken to his real boss where he's executed for failing to capture the King of Dragons.

With the threat of the Dragon Hunters gone once & for all, Toothless & the others finally & permanently retrieve the Dragon Eye, but knowing that there are still people out there who will use it's power for evil, they destroy it along with the Dragone Eye II & the lenses so that know one will ever use them again, as for the King of Dragons' egg, one of their allies decide to place it in the care of a very mysterious someone where it'll remain safe. Afterwards Toothless attends Dagur & Mala's (who began to fall in love with each other) wedding & Stoick eventually pulls through from his injuries and continues with his chiefly duties, and with the war between the forces of Johann over for good, Toothless & the others pack up and permanently leave Dragon's Edge to return to Berk, really matured & grown-up as well as ready to face new challenges coming for them in the future.

How to Train Your Dragon 2[]

2 years later, Hiccup and Toothless have taken to exploring the areas beyond Berk, as well as experimenting with a glide-suit that Hiccup has developed that allows him to fly alongside Toothless (an adjustment to Toothless' tailfin allowing him to maintain a glide on his own, although he still cannot steer). On one of these adventures, he sees that Hiccup is unsure with himself Stoick plans on making him chief which is something he talks about with Astrid, but during this they witness smoke coming from a distance & when they fly there to see it, they find a fort full of frozen spikes that belongs to a band of dragon trappers, when their leader Eret takes notice of Toothless, he gives them a firm warning that their boss Drago Bludvist is building a "dragon army" & they think one of them attacked their fort & stole their dragons.

Although they manage to escape, Hiccup takes Eret's warning to heart & he flies off to warn his father about it, where he quickly learns that not only does Stoick know about Drago, he takes his presence absolutely seriously & has every dragon placed into their stables and says that Drago's plan of building a dragon army should be taken as an immediate act of war. However Toothless sees that Hiccup wants a more peaceful way of solving this & flies off to Eret's ship to get him to take him to Drago, but the duo eventually fly off again when Stoick tries to tell them that Drago is the type that can't be reasoned with.

While flying off to somehow find Drago, Toothless & Hiccup encounter the rider that Eret was talking about & Toothless is sent falling into the icy water while the rider's dragon takes Hiccup back to another nest, fortunately Toothless is rescued and the duo soon discover that the rider is Hiccup's long-lost mother, Valka, who reveals to him the night she was taken the dragon, Cloudjumper, actually bonded with her & took her to live with a giant Bewilderbeast: an alpha dragon that acts as the dragon king. Afterwards, Toothless & Hiccup spend some much-needed time with Valka where they begin learning more about each other, during this Toothless discovers he's got a series of hidden "spikes" on his back, that even didn't didn't know about -- most likely because he lacked other Night Furies to show them to him -- which he can subsequently extend at will to increase his maneuverability in the air. These "spikes" are flat, leathery flaps, placed in a "V" shape and extending from his back to the end of his tail, shortly after the saddle.

Eventually, after spending sometime with Valka, Toothless & Hiccup are reunited with Stoick & Gobber, who at first assume that they're in danger, quickly dissolves into a heartwarming family reunion when Stoick reconciles with Valka as well as the prospect of being part of the reunited family. However, while Stoick & Gobber were busy trying to look for Hiccup, Astrid & the others proceed to force Eret into bringing them to Drago, & when they try and warn him about the threat Hiccup possesses, he immediately switches his directive of just building an army of dragons to taking over Berk, they are however able to get Eret on their side for real.

As they are resting up, Toothless sees that many of the dragons are fleeing from the nest and when they all go out to see it, they quickly discover that Drago along with his entire empire has come to both take as many dragons as they can so they can draw the Alpha out, prompting him & the Haddock family to fly down and stop them. As he and his newfound family, along with a really angry Bewilderbeast, do serious damage to Drago's empire, Toothless & Hiccup watch in horror is that among the many dragons he subjugated, the most powerful he's got is another Bewilderbeast he got under his control which acts as the Alpha to all the dragons he's got under his control & after a gruesome battle, it eventually triumphs over the other Bewilderbeast & takes command over the dragons in the icy glacier.

When Hiccup attempts to confront Drago Bludvist and his Alpha Bewilderbeast, he is unprepared for the Bewilderbeast's Alpha Dragon "status", which allows it to take control of Toothless on Drago's orders. Toothless is nearly made to kill Hiccup, but Stoick saves Hiccup at the cost of his own life. In pain and grief, Hiccup initially rejects Toothless when Toothless regains his own mind, allowing Drago to use his Bewilderbeast to take control of all the dragons and lead them to Berk, even riding on Toothless personally.

However, when Drago arrives back at Berk, he finds Hiccup and the other Riders already present, having managed to return home by riding the baby dragons that are outside the control of the Alpha. Still mocking Hiccup's beliefs in how to train dragons, Drago allows Hiccup a chance to "talk" to Toothless, only to be shocked when Hiccup's words and his bond with Toothless allow him to break the Alpha's control. Returned to himself and guided by Hiccup's words, Toothless not only charges a plasma bolt that saves him and Hiccup from being frozen by the Bewilderbeast's ice but subsequently challenges the Bewilderbeast directly, breaking its hold on the other dragons and rallying them to aid him. After the Bewilderbeast is forced to retreat after Toothless breaks one of its tusks while Drago is killed, the assembled dragons all acknowledge Toothless as their new alpha, recognizing Toothless as a worthy guardian as opposed to the fear and authority maintained by Drago's Bewilderbeast while Hiccup accepts his new role as well and proudly becomes the new Chief of Berk.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World[]

Occurring a year after Drago Bludvist's defeat and death, Toothless is now the king of dragons and rules over them in a similar manner as Valka's Bewilderbeast once did and he comes along with Hiccup as he continues to free Dragons captured by the new leaders of Drago's empire. As he raids one of the Warlords ships at the beginning of the film with Hiccup, Toothless senses something, turning around briefly to check what it is. After not seeing anything, he decides to leave with Hiccup and the rest of the Dragon Riders. The night after returning, Toothless and Hiccup retreat to a cliffside near Berk where Hiccup looks at his map, and Toothless looks longingly at Hiccup's prosthetic leg. Hiccup asks if he wants it, and then throws it for Toothless to fetch, which he does happily. During his game of fetch, Toothless comes across the dragon he sensed before; a female Light Fury (a close relative of his race that is white rather than black). As he tries to introduce himself, Hiccup inadvertently scares her off, and she reveals she can turn invisible.

After the Light Fury escapes, Hiccup and Tuffnut later discover a dragon trap set by the dragon hunter Grimmel the Grisly in the woods when Toothless sets it off and narrowly escapes. Grimmel visits Hiccup later that night and explains he has killed every Night Fury except Toothless, and that he wants Hiccup to hand him over, but the latter has prepared an ambush to capture him; Grimmel manages to escape, burning Hiccup's house in the progress with the aid of brainwashed and dangerous strike-class dragons he's got under his command called Deathgrippers. Taking the threat Grimmel poses very seriously, Hiccup rallies Berk's citizens and dragons to leave Berk on a quest to find the Hidden World, the ancestral home of all dragon-kind that's said to be found under a great fissure located in the farthest reaches of the world with the Light Fury following them. Mid-journey, the Berkians discover an island which they initially plan to rest on; soon, though, they decide to settle there, even if only temporarily. Seeing Toothless' inability to fly solo hindering his growing relationship with the Light Fury, Hiccup builds him an automatic tail, one that is unbreakable and fireproof. Upon receiving the tail, Toothless flies off, meeting the Light Fury on his own and flying with her to the Hidden World, the homeland of all dragons, discovering his own ability to turn invisible in the process.

Hiccup and Astrid later search for Toothless, finding the Hidden World and seeing Toothless and the Light Fury leading the dragons there as Alphas and mates. However, the two are soon discovered, with Toothless being forced to leave and take Hiccup and Astrid back to the Berkians. Hiccup, having seen the Hidden World, realizes his people wouldn't be safe living with dragons, and moreover, have no business intruding upon the dragons' home. Suddenly, Grimmel, having followed Ruffnut after capturing her and later setting her free due to her being incredibly irritating, appears and captures Toothless and the Light Fury, and things only get worse from there when all of Berk's dragons come to attempt to save him, but Grimmel saw this coming & threatens to kill the Light Fury if Toothless doesn't order them to stop, & still unable to control Grimmel's Deathgrippers, he is forced to lead all of the dragons to the massive fleet of ships the warlords have brought and be willingly caged if he wants to save his new mate.

With Astrid's encouragement, Hiccup sets out with the Dragon Riders to stop Grimmel and his army and save Toothless, the Light Fury, and all the captured dragons. Gliding in on wingsuits, the group catch Grimmel's army off-guard, igniting a massive battle, during which Grimmel tries to kill Toothless after going back on his deal out of a desire to drive the night furies to extinction. Hiccup frees Toothless, while Grimmel drugs the Light Fury into obeying him. Hiccup and Toothless give chase; after a heated aerial duel, Grimmel tranquilizes Toothless midair. Hiccup, realizing he cannot save Toothless by himself, frees the Light Fury instead and commands her to save the Night Fury. Hiccup and Grimmel plummet to the sea with Hiccup fully accepting that he may die as a result. The Light Fury, however, unexpectedly returns to save Hiccup, while allowing Grimmel to fall to his death, ending his threat once and for all as well as avenging the Night Furies.

The battle won, back on the island, Hiccup fully realizes that the dragons will likely never be safe in the human world so long as humans exist that will hunt and abuse them and that the Hidden World is where they truly belong. With great sadness, Hiccup and Toothless bid farewell to each other as all of the Berkians set their dragons free. Toothless and the Light Fury then lead the dragons to the Hidden World. Years later Hiccup and Astrid (now married and having two children, Zephyr and Nuffink) sail across the sea to visit Toothless, the Light Fury, their three hybrid offspring: Dart, Pouncer, Ruffrunner, and Stormfly at the edge of the Hidden World; Hiccup vows that until mankind can coexist peacefully with dragons, the dragons will stay hidden while the Berkians guard their secret.

How to Train Your Dragon: Homecoming[]

9 Years later after departing from Berk, Toothless & his mate would race after their kids when they sneak out of the hidden world to visit New Berk. While there, Toothless would accidentally become part of a play that Hiccup & Astrid had put on in an attempt to show the newest generations of Berk, specifically their kids, about how they befriended dragons.

Later that night, Toothless leads his family as they fly from New Berk & back to the Hidden World, just not before he left Hiccup a crystal from the their world as a present & eats a bowl of his favorite fish. This experience left a happy reminder to Hiccup that their loved ones are always close by as long as they hold them in their hearts which makes Astrid remark that their family should graciously return the favor.

Dragons: The Nine Realms[]

Eventually, Toothless would eventually get the chance to show Hiccup & his friends the rest of the dragon world, where they would separate the lands into Nine realms due to the type of species that inhabit certain areas. But it was also during that time that they would also come into conflict with the brilliant but dangerous world serpent Jörmungandr, the dragon species Apex predator (& possibly the reason why dragons fear eels) who sought to destroy everything. Seeing the snake as the type that's untrainable, Hiccup & Toothless chose to lock Jörmungandr away in an area called "the Dark Realm" in a cage that only a Night or Light Fury can open.

1,300 years later where dragons had since been regarded as a legend to the rest of the world, Toothless' descendant Thunder would once again reintroduce dragon-kind to the rest of the world & would even come to form a bond of his own with Hiccup's descendant Tom, and together, they would go on having adventures of their own & continue to spread the legacy of their respective ancestors for the newest generation of human & dragons alike.

How to Train Your Dragon (2025)[]

Toothless appears in the live-action remake as a real life Night Fury.

Appearance[]

Toothless is much larger than his book counterpart, being much bigger in size than Hiccup. He has jet black scales covering his whole body, his sides having small light patches in a pattern similar to that of a manta ray. Toothless possesses at least two sets of wings (one main pair and two smaller ones near the base of his tail). He is missing his left tail fin, when Hiccup shot Toothless down with his Bolas-Shooting Ballista, crashing into a tree where his left tailfin was damaged, missing, or cut/sliced off. This is later replaced by various artificial prosthetic tail fins that Hiccup constructs himself until Hiccup made a automatic black one that resembles his real tail fin and Hiccup adds Toothless' scales to make it fireproof which Toothless accepts the new tail permanently.

Toothless' eyes are a greenish-yellow. He can narrow his pupils to slits when threatened or angry, similar to that of a cat. But when he is docile or happy, his pupils become larger and more dog-like. Toothless gets his name from his sets of retractable teeth. He proves himself to be a very able fighter, such as when he rushes to Hiccup's aid in his battle with the Monstrous Nightmare, Toothless quickly causes the larger dragon to back down. Toothless also shows himself superior to most Vikings, as proven against Stoick in a quick skirmish.

In the first seasons of Race to the Edge, Toothless wore battle armor in order to avoid the Dragon Root lanced arrows. His first set of armor was made of Screaming Death scales that Hiccup and Snoutlout got when they traveled to Screaming Death Island to get the dragon’s scales because the Screaming Death has the strongest scales of any dragon. The only down-side of the original dragon armor was that it was heavy, but Toothless was still pretty fast while wearing it. They later switch to a set made of Gronckle Iron because it was also lighter in addition to being very durable. Despite that setback, Hiccup and Fishlegs were able to perfect armor. However, only Toothless and Hookfang had this armor made for them thus far and they haven't worn it again due to finding it uncomfortable.

Personality[]

Toothless is very intelligent and seems to have a dry sense of humor, similar to Hiccup. He does not take kindly to being offended or anyone offending or endangering his human friend, but is usually playful, docile, maybe even a little teasing when not threatened. He also shows a great curiosity, imitating Hiccup's actions and mannerisms when they initially encounter one another. Toothless' intelligence shows many times throughout the film, being able to understand Hiccup's words and commands as well as agree with some of what he says. It is shown that he has become aware of Hiccup's crush on Astrid, even seeming to briefly tease him about it.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Night Fury Physiology: According to the Dragon Manual, Night Furies are considered to be so mysterious and the most feared dragons, that it was often called the "unholy offspring of lightning and death itself." Throughout the franchise, Toothless is shown to have several physical attributes that surpasses that of most other Night Furies. This also makes Toothless to have some resilience/endurance and stamina to surpass standard dragon's weakness including Night Fury's weakness. Despite hunting Night Furies to a near extinction, Grimmel underestimated how powerful Toothless would become, as he didn't know Night Furies can turn invisible by summon lightning from an electric storm.
    • Intelligence and Communication Skills: As a Night Fury, Toothless' intelligence is unrivaled amongst the other dragons and often displays the attributes of an incredibly strategic thinker. Therefore, Toothless' intelligence is abnormally high and is much smarter than most other dragons. Toothless seems to be one of the few dragons who attempts to show creativity, as shown by his repeated attempts at drawing. He can comprehend silent commands via hand signals and motions and has also been taught by Hiccup to recognize his rider's Dragon Call as a summon. In "Stryke Out", he was able to trick a Razorwhip in the fights and understand how helpless the Triple Stryke was and decides to spare the dragon.
      • Synchronization: Thanks to the time they used the prosthetic tail fin, Toothless and Hiccup are able to fly together in perfect sync. Not only that, but they also understand each other the best out of all dragons and Riders, which was demonstrated several times.
    • Enhanced Speed and Agility: Toothless can fly over one hundred miles per hour and his aerial acrobatics, though requiring Hiccup's help to pull off, allow him to escape rather brutal confrontations with little difficulty. Even when not flying, Toothless can tear along the ground at terrific speeds and is one of the most agile dragons on land, shown being able to leap from trees, boulders, walls, etc. In the Book of Dragons by Maggie Testa, it is stated that Night Furies can fly faster than 750 miles per hour (1207 kilometers per hour). Being a Night Fury, Toothless is stated to be the fastest dragon in the world with only several dragons can catch up to it's speed. However it likely Night Furies don't use their full speed (and it is shown several times that these dragons take shortcuts to catch up to Toothless like what Grimmel's Deathgrippers did) so it likely that most of these dragons cannot completely rival the full speed of a Night Fury and the only dragon species that can rival a Night Fury in terms of full speed is the Skrill (who is in same dragon class as Toothless; Strike and rivals him ins speed, firepower, and intelligence; but is slight slower in flight) or perhaps the Light Fury. Night Furies' tails are also one of the main sources of their flying ability, and altering the tail can change its abilities. Despite being the fastest dragon in the world, Toothless is shown to be extremely fast even in average flight. He can keep up with a Speed Stinger and even the Lead Speed Stinger on ground battle. His wings and tail are also very flexible to fold their huge and powerful wings together or preform moves like a tail whip or a wing shield to use in combat.
    • Enhanced Strength and Combat: Toothless has shown to be tremendously strong for a dragon of his size, able to hold his own against other larger dragon species such as the Monstrous Nightmare, Whispering Death and Razorwhip. He can carry heavy objects, such as boulders and branches with his front legs alone, as well as adult humans such as Stoick, Gobber, Alvin, and Drago Bludvist. While carrying Hiccup on his back, he was also able to carry Hookfang with the extra weight of Snotlout with little struggle, as well as catch Barf and Belch when they fell off a cliff. When flying at full speed, he can knock down a dragon-proof ballista straight into the sea. As a Strike Class dragon, Toothless has a vice-like jaw that can exert great force. Toothless has showed signs of getting stronger as while he once struggled to pull Barf and Belch (A Hideous Zippleback that is implied to be physically stronger than a Night Fury) off a roof in "Twinsanity" he was able to retrain them with not signs of struggle in "A Tale of Two Dragons" and lift them with no struggle when the fell off the cliff in "The Zippleback Experience". While he was once exhausted from lifting Stoick and Hiccup, mostly Stoick alone in "How To Pick Your Dragon" he was able to lift both of them by the time of both "Crushing It" and "Midnight Scrum" without any struggle. Toothless is also strong in combat, being able to fend off Vikings like Stoick and several others at once, as seen in the first film. Toothless is also a very capable and persistent fighter on the ground. He has easily taken out a Gronckle in a short amount of time, as well as holding his own with Monstrous Nightmares and Whispering Deaths. Even with the inability to fly, he is a capable fighter as shown in "What Flies Beneath". He has proven against a Triple Stryke, a dragon of a similar power level. However it is shown on multiple occasions that Toothless flight ability was hindered so it slightly weakened his combat skills as many dragons he fought had a flight advantage. He can use his long wings to both cause huge gusts of wind and forming shields to protect them from most attacks.
    • Wind Gust: Similar to most dragons, Toothless’ large wings allow him to create a small gust of wind that is very strong. He first used this, with the other dragons, to blow the Smothering Smokebreath veil of smoke away ("Breakneck Bog"). He also used this same technique by himself to blow the fog away and reveals that the metal thief is actually Smothering Smokebreaths ("Smoke Gets in Your Eyes"). He later used it again to help put out a forest fire with the help of Torch and Barf and Belch.
    • Wing Shield: Toothless is able to use his enormous wings to shield Hiccup from being burned alive or even killed. A notable example of this was in "Animal House", where Toothless and Stormfly used it to protect Astrid and Hiccup from being buried in an avalanche. Another example was in "Zippleback Down", where Toothless used his wings to shield Hiccup from Torch. Also in "Dragon Eye of the Beholder, Part 1", where a bunch of arrows bounced off Toothless' wing when he shielded Hiccup from them. This also happen in “A Time to Skrill”, where a dragon root arrow bounce off of Toothless. Toothless also used this in "Crash Course" to protect Hiccup from the Cavern Crasher's fire and in "Quake, Rattle and Roll" where he shielded both Fishlegs and Hiccup with both of his wings. Toothless' wings are also able to withstand a Small Shadow Wing lava blast as shown in "The Longest Day".
    • Enhanced Stamina and Endurance: Toothless can fly longer than any other dragon. But he was shown to be exhausted during the first search for the Skrill and carrying heavy objects or someone heavy like Stoick for a whole day (he overcame this later on). He has shown to be able to run long distance with no sign of being exhausted from the Cove to the Kill Ring. Toothless' bodily tissue is substantially harder than regular dragons, and he is also able to take a lot of damage in battle from Hookfang, fighting off the Berk warriors, and Stoick the Vast. He can take attacks from his rival, and still look untouched. After he was poisoned by the Triple Stryke he was still able to fight and defeat him. He was also able to fly for a short time, despite being shot by a dragon root arrow. Although for some reason Night Furies cannot recover fast like other dragons after they are hit with dragon root arrows. Despite using all his energy to cloak in the third movie, Toothless managed to keep flying like it did nothing to him. However, he did fainted to the Deathgripper venom arrow after he de-cloaked.
      • Cold Resistance: In several episodes like "Animal House", "A Time to Skrill", “Triple Cross”, and many other episodes, even in short movies and the second movie that Toothless has been ( and survive, if sometimes playing in the snow) in a cold environment, like a snowstorm, the tundra, snowy mountains, arctic islands, and even freezing water without any discomfort. However, Grimmel the Grisly states that Night Furies cannot survive in consistently cold environments. This implies possibly that Nighty Furies cannot inhabit a cold place for an long time, or this weakness doesn't apply to Toothless because during his time with Hiccup he developed a tolerance to freezing cold temperatures.
    • Retractable Teeth: As a Night Fury, Toothless has the ability to retract his teeth when not using them. This unique trait can make him appear to be toothless, hence his name.
    • Enhanced Senses: Toothless appears to have an uncannily great sense of hearing, able to hear Hiccup's cries for help from the Cove even when Hiccup is in the arena as even possible can hear a small bug like a fly buzzing far in the distance. This good sense of hearing plays into his ability to use sonar, and he is seen using it in order to locate Dragon Island. He tracks Hiccup by his sense of smell but loses him when Hiccup takes to the air on the back of a Deadly Nadder. He also seems to have the ability of night vision though Hiccup did question when flying into the dark cave so possibly his night vision isn't that strong in the dark (However this may be due to the fact that while Night Furies are nocturnal to hunting and flying in the night, Toothless is mostly active during the day so that he can match his activities to the Vikings' and spend more time with Hiccup and his friends). He is, however, able to echolocate like a bat; sending sounds off and listening for them to bounce off objects around him, giving him the ability to find his way around in the dark. However, the good sense of hearing can often be used against him though, making him relatively easy to control and influence from the call of an Alpha Dragon.
      • Echolocation: In "We Are Family, Part 1", it is revealed that Toothless has a hidden ability that Hiccup never known about it, being so long with Toothless he finds a strange ability that Toothless can use echolocation to guide himself and Hiccup out of the cave they were trapped in. Hiccup recalls later that "Toothless let out a weird sound that bounced back toward them, and was able to use that to get out". He also used this ability in "Frozen" when they are flying over the frozen sea looking for Johann's ship. He can then use it to see in clouds, which he fits when looking for the Skrill.
    • Stealth and Camouflage: Toothless' black scales and extreme speed make him hard to notice, especially at night or in dark places. Toothless has the ability to move with silence even in pitch black conditions, and be one with darkness. This was demonstrated when confronting the Flightmare or when battling the Red Death in How to Train Your Dragon.
    • Cloaking/Lightning Invisibility: Toothless has the ability to channel lightning which enables him to seemingly disappear for a short period of time, similar to that of a Light Fury. Toothless can do this by summoning lightning from the sky to turn his scales reflective, causing an electric aura to surround him and become temporarily invisible, although it has been shown to use up a lot of their energy. The lightning that Toothless channel around his body will also electrocute anything in his vicinity. It is shown that anything made from Nighty Fury material can avoid being electrocuted to death so it implies that only Nighty Furies can resist their electric aura. This ability also surprised Grimmel himself as he didn't know Night Furies can do this, despite successfully hunting them down for years.
    • Firepower/Plasma Blasts: Like all dragons, Toothless is also able to shoot several forms of fire. His signature attack is dive bombing where he dives at great speed and then fires a precise and extremely explosive blast. It is strong enough to destroy a catapult and even knock down the Red Death while making the ground shake a little and sending a slight but noticeable shock-wave. He can also weaken his blasts enough to use them for non-violent purposes (like knocking people out of trees). This level of control also allows him to ricochet his shots off of other surfaces like cliff faces.
      • Shot Limit Recharge: While a Night Fury’s shot limit is unknown, it is implied to be six. There is a lot of uncertainty about the Night Fury's shot limit, even if most sources and even Hiccup himself states that Toothless' limit is six. In the final fight of the first film, he was able to fire more than ten shots, with seven full-powered blasts in quick succession. Later, in the episode "Frozen", Toothless' shot limit was counted to be about 14-15 shots. It's possible that the limit is six, but a Night Fury can reload its very quickly.
    • Saliva: Oddly, Toothless' saliva has an incredible amount of healing properties. However, this was only stated in "Defiant One" to heal Snotlout's tongue after eating some strange berries. It is possible Hiccup made this up, and the effect of the berries wore off. Hiccup also stated that Toothless' saliva doesn't wash out. It is also proven to be an effective adhesive, more than human saliva, as shown when Hiccup uses it to stick together parts of his map. It also can apparently fireproof objects when spread over them, as shown with his tail and Hiccup’s armor.
    • Swimming: Toothless is a great swimmer and has saved Hiccup from drowning several times in the process. He has also been seen sea skimming from one island to another. Sea Skimming is a particular way of swimming that, according to Hiccup, "it's like flying, but not". To perform this, Toothless dives and jumps out of the water continuously. This ability doesn't require for Toothless to be ridden by anyone, and he can do this all by himself.
    • Secondary Spines: Toothless' hidden ability, that was unknown even to himself. Revealed by Valka, those leathery flaps on the Back are flat fins-like spikes, placed in "V" shape and extending from his back to the end of the tail. They gave him more maneuverability and control in flight, almost like a second tail. According to the How to Train Your Dragon 2 Film Commentary, this ability is common to dragons.
    • Alpha Dominance Display: After being sufficiently enraged by Drago's Bewilderbeast, Toothless was able to "charge" himself in some way, it gives him more strength, stronger fire with seemingly no shot limit. This also gave him the more menacing look, with his back, nose, and mouth glowing blue color similar to his fire, probably because of amount and strength of this fire inside him. In this state, he challenged the Bewilderbeast and became the Alpha to all dragons at the end of How to Train Your Dragon 2. It is also shown that Toothless, when in Alpha mode, can ignore the Alpha dragon. However, some dragons are able to disregard his dominance. Baby dragons do not show regard to anyone and dragons in a panic or un-thinking frenzy will/are unable to listen. This is demonstrated in the graphic novel, Dragonvine, when a large group of frenzied Silkspanners fails to heed Toothless and catch him up in their webbing. It is also revealed that dragons that are drugged with Deathgripper venom are immune to his commands.

Weakness[]

Night Furies have very few weaknesses, making them hard to combat. While they have no unique weakness, they appear to have standard/common dragon weakness, but for some reason a dragon root arrow renders them weak and vulnerable for sometime, while sometimes other dragons can recover faster, as seen in "Enemy of My Enemy". They are also susceptible to the dragon root plant itself, allergic to eels, can be poisoned by blue oleander flowers, and are affected by Grimora parasites. Like all dragons, Night Furies also have a shot limit (but the exact number of shots tends to be inconsistent for Toothless as he is shown to recharge his shots very quickly), can be disoriented by loud noises (loud noises doesn't effect him badly as other dragons, thugh), and scratching a specific spot at the bottom of his neck will incapacitate him. The Night Furies' large wings make them vulnerable to powerful sheering winds if they were to attempt a prolonged hover in such conditions, as displayed in "Portrait of Hiccup as a Buff Man", but this could be said for most dragons with an average wingspan. Like other dragons, Night Furies are also susceptible to Deathgripper venom, with one vial being enough to subdue one into submission or knock them unconscious.

  • Tailfin Dependency: A primary weakness Night Furies have is that the dual tail fins on their tails allow them to remain stabilized in flight. If one is damaged, missing, or cut/sliced off, they will be unable to fly and are limited to only gliding. It is also stated above that altering/tampering the tail can tamper with the Night Fury’s speed.
  • Cold Temperatures: According to Grimmel the Grisly, Night Furies are unable to survive in consistently cold environments like the tundra, snowy mountains, or arctic islands. However repeatedly in several episodes like "Animal House" and "A Time to Skrill" it was shown that Toothless was in these environments and was able to survive in a cold environment without any discomfort. This implies that a Nighty Fury can't inhabit a cold place for an enormous amount of time, or this weakness doesn't apply to Toothless because during his time with Hiccup he developed an immunity to cold by regulating his body temperature with a buildup of energy, he has a much higher resilience to cold.
  • Flying Long Distances/Trackability: According to Grimmel the Grisly, Night Furies are also unable to fly for long distances without resting/sleeping, which can make them easy to track or hunt down. However, Toothless seems to be able to surpass this weakness himself as shown multiple times to go on for several weeks without resting or sleeping, as in "Live and Let Fly (Flight Club)" Hiccup stated that Toothless, in the previous episode, wasn't given food or water to survive but he was still able to fly and search for Hiccup.

Equipment[]

  • Prosthetic Tailfin: After being shot down and losing his left tail fin, Hiccup created an artificial prosthetic tailfin that allows Toothless to fly but they soon discovered that he needed Hiccup's help. Throughout the tv series the tailfin is repeated destroyed but Hiccup always has a spare. It was shown in the short "Gift of the Night Fury" that Hiccup made a automatic tailfin to allow Toothless to fly without him. Toothless later discarded that in favor of flying with Hiccup and the automatic one was also wasn't fireproof. Later on in "How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World", Hiccup made a new automatic black one that is covered in Toothless’ scales and saliva for it to be fully fireproof for any dragon blast (including Night Fury ones). It later showed it was incapable of being destroyed by lightning and it can go on cloak form with Toothless.

Trivia[]

  • Toothless is also shown to have similarities with Stitch.
  • Toothless is not only similar to his book counterpart but he is also similar to Hiccup’s Windwalker as both are jet black, can fly really fast, and very loyal to Hiccup. Furthermore both are missing body parts from Viking attacks, with Toothless losing his tail fin to Hiccup's bolas and the Windwalker losing his right front limb to a dragon trap.
  • To make Toothless' vocalizations, the filmmakers recorded sounds of elephants, horses, tigers, domestic cats and jet engines to create the character's sound effects while Toothless' vocal effects are even provided by sound designer Randy Thom.
  • When Toothless begins glowing for his climactic battle against Drago's Bewilderbeast, the way his spines light up with blue as he shoots unlimited fire blasts is a possible reference to the famous monster Godzilla, whose spines light up with energy as he charges up and unleashes his atomic breath.
    • Coincidentally, both the American Godzilla film and How to Train Your Dragon 2 came out in the year 2014. Five years later, Godzilla: King of the Monsters and How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World both came out in the year 2019. Just like the ending of the second film where Toothless became the Alpha Dragon after defeating Drago's Bewilderbeast, Godzilla becomes the Alpha Titan after defeating his nemesis King Ghidorah.
  • Despite Grimmel claiming that Night Furies cannot survive in the cold, Toothless has shown to enter cold environments and fly at high altitude (where it is also cold) but not feeling any discomfort while being in it. It possible that Grimmel was just mocking the Warlord or Toothless had learn to adapt to the cold environment and that this weakness doesn't apply to him. This would make sense as the Barbaric Archipelago, including Berk is often filled with snow and cold temperatures.
  • When Toothless uses his cloaking ability the electric aura is similar to the Skrill when it uses its's control over electricity, implying that these two dragons are distantly related/closest relative to each other due to their similarities as both dragons summon/use electricity, both species are the most feared, and are the fastest dragons on earth (Night Furies being the fastest and Skrills being the second fastest).
  • It is hinted a few times that Toothless has astraphobia (fear of lightning and thunder), which is ironic as Night Furies are referred to as the "unholy offspring of lightning and death itself." This could be due to the tail as it incorporates a lot of metal and lightning is attracted to metal. But in How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, however, Toothless is shown channeling lightning into his body without any signs of fear, which suggests that he managed to overcome his fear of lightning.
