- “Look, I'm not the one with the problem, okay? It's the world that seems to have a problem with me! People take one look at me and go "Aah! Help! Run! A big, stupid, ugly ogre!". They judge me before they even know me. That's why I'm better off alone.”
- ―Shrek
Shrek is the titular protagonist of the DreamWorks Animation franchise of the same name. He is a green humanoid ogre once living alone with a resentment towards those who judged him by appearance. He would open up after meeting his best friends Donkey and Puss in Boots, and his wife Fiona, having a new perspective on society's views towards ogres. This would lead Shrek to become heir to the kingdom of Far Far Away, and raise three children, Farkle, Fergus and Felicia.
In the original film, Shrek was introduced as a villainous protagonist similar to his book counterpart, however, this is just a plot to reveal that Lord Farquaad is the true main villain later on, as the Shrek of the movie version was never a villain.
Background[]
Shrek was born to an unnamed father and mother about thirty years prior to when he rescued Fiona. He lived with his parents before he was sent away on his 7th birthday. His father allegedly wanted to eat him by bathing him in barbecue sauce and making him sleep with an apple in his mouth, a memory that might cause his own trauma and his fear of fatherhood. Although they didn't want him to go, they had to follow the "ogre traditions”.
Shrek lived alone in a swamp in the middle of the forest. At first, he appears to like his privacy and enjoys scaring people, but never harmed them. He enjoyed his own life at his home like taking mud baths, brushing his teeth with bug paste to make breath nastier and stinkier, and farting in his pool. Even though his background is unknown, it is assumed that most ogres harm people, although Shrek wasn't violent, yet he was still thought of as an evil, intimidating, and hideous ogre to most. He does woodwork sometimes.
Personality[]
Before meeting Donkey and Fiona, Shrek lived a solitary life, preferring not to associate himself with others due to people's fear of him, while occasionally playing on their fear to frighten away intruders. During his quest to rescue Fiona and get his swamp back, however, Shrek slowly begins to open up to his companions, revealing his insecurities about how others perceive him. With assistance from Donkey, Shrek realizes his feelings for Fiona and confesses his love for her during her wedding to Lord Farquaad. He’s fiercely protective of Fiona and his allies and he’ll go to great lengths to help them in any way.
Since marrying Fiona, Shrek would have been deathly afraid of the prospect of having children, possibly due to his own upbringing as an ogre. By the end of Shrek the Third, however, he overcomes this fear and proves to be a caring and loving father.
In Shrek Forever After, however, Shrek, despite having become a celebrity and family man, was shown to miss his days of being a real ogre and had long for the old days. During his children's first birthday, his ego was further injured due to several mishaps at the party and this cause Shrek to become so pressured this made him lose his temper and even go as far as to smash the birthday cake and lash out at Fiona in anger. Because of this, along with his feeling of desiderium, this led to him to commit a reckless and careless action in which he signed Rumpelstiltskin's Ogre for a day contract, without even realizing that he'll vanish from existence after that day was up. Upon realizing what he had done later on, he wept in regret and shame, knowing that because of his mistake he'll never see his family again. However, upon seeing Fiona again in an alternate reality, he was overjoyed at first, but that turn to dismay when she tells him that she doesn't know him. After he was able to fulfill the 'exit clause' of the contract, Shrek expressed surprise upon seeing that he's back in his own reality to the time where he was about to lash out. Upon seeing his family again, he found a great and newfound appreciation for them.
In the original William Stieg book, Shrek was much more villainous and had none of the heroic traits he has in the films. He took great pride in his ogre heritage, stole food from random peasants and liked to cause trouble for the people around him, living up to everyone's perception of him as a big, scary monster. He was also shown to be clever, as he used his magical powers to outsmart his foes.
Physical appearances[]
Powers and abilities[]
- Superhuman Strength: As an ogre, Shrek has immense physical strength far superior to ordinary humans. He has been shown lifting a fully armored knight above his head and throwing him like a rag doll, carrying both Donkey and Fiona at once, breaking through a wooden door with little difficulty, and moving a large rock all by himself. One of his most impressive feats was grabbing Dragon by her tail, temporarily stopping her. In the first movie, Shrek was also shown fighting Lord Farquaad's knights at the Duloc wedding, trying to overpower them. But in the second movie, as a human, his strength was not strong enough at lower human levels, whilst he was being arrested by the knights and he was easily outnumbered without any efforts, until at the end when he is turned back, his tremendous ogre strength is restored. In the third and fourth films, his ogre abilities give him more power to fight off the pirates and the witches.
- Superhuman Durability: Due to his ogre physiology, Shrek can travel on foot for miles without tiring. He also survived being burned alive by Dragon and shot with an arrow in his butt.
- Master Hand-To-Hand Combatant: Despite having no martial arts training like Fiona, Shrek is a capable hand-to-hand fighter and can often hold his own against multiple opponents at once. Shrek's fighting style has been likened to a mix of Krav Maga and Irish Street Fighting
- Expert Survivalist: Living in the middle of a swamp for most of his life, Shrek has learned to live off the land to support himself and later his family. He is an excellent hunter, forager and cook, creating improvised dishes such as weed rat stew.
- Expert Tactician: At times, Shrek displays a high degree of cunning and cleverness, using a broken sword and chains to ensnare Dragon, as well as getting the idea to create Mongo by seeing Gingerbread Man standing next to Far Far Away Castle.
- Storytelling: Shrek has adept knowledge of fairy tales and ogre lore, such as the stories of Throwback and Bloodnut the Flatulent.
- Powerful Roar: Whenever he loses his temper or he gets really fed up, Shrek has the ability to let out a roar so powerful it could cause some people to be blown backwards.
- Swallowing Lightning: In the original book, Shrek managed to swallow up an entire lightning bolt.
- Heat Vision: In the book, Shrek uses his heat vision to heat up a cold meal from a random villager he frightened.
- Fire Breathing: In the book, Shrek breathes fire on a knight when entering the castle to meet the ugly princess. This ability would carry over in the first Shrek video game for X-Box.
Beginnings[]
Shrek was born in an unknown swamp where he lived with his parents as a child. Growing up, his father tried to eat him and his mother never gave him so much affection, giving him fears of becoming a parent himself one day. According to Shrek: The Musical, his parents eventually abandoned Shrek when he was 8 years old because it was an "Ogre Tradition". Shrek tried to be accepted by the people, but failed because they believed him to be a "big, stupid, ugly ogre". Deciding that it would be best to live his life in solitude, Shrek finds a swamp which he decides to make a home out of. Every now and then, villagers would raid his territory in an attempt to kill him, but he would always scare them off and took amusement out of doing so.
Shrek[]
Shrek annoyed by Donkey's singing.
In the first film, Shrek is shown as a recluse who lives a fairly carefree life in his swamp. At first, he appears to like being by himself and enjoys scaring people, but not hurting them. Even though his background is unknown, it is assumed that most ogres hurt people, but Shrek isn't violent.
One day in the forest, a talking donkey enters Shrek's territory pursued by a group of knights. The head knight orders Shrek to be arrested, but Shrek effortlessly scares them off and saves Donkey. A grateful Donkey thanks Shrek repeatedly (to the latter's irritation,) and convinces him to spend the night outside of Shrek's house. However, more fairy tale creatures soon arrive and begin to overcrowd his swamp. Shrek demands to know why they have come and learns that Lord Farquaad has dumped them all there. Outraged, Shrek takes Donkey and goes to his castle to demand his swamp back.
Upon arriving at Farquaad's castle in Duloc, he defeats every knight in a contest to determine who will rescue Princess Fiona. When he wins, this intrigues Farquaad and he cuts a deal with Shrek: If he rescues his princess, he will give Shrek's swamp back. Shrek agrees and the duo set out once again to the dark castle Fiona is locked away in, guarded by a fire-breathing Dragon. But first, Shrek and Donkey have to cross the only rope bridge to the castle hanging precariously over a lake of lava. Once inside, Shrek orders Donkey to find stairs because the princess will be in the highest room of the tallest tower while Shrek himself searches for the Dragon. Unfortunately, Donkey inadvertently finds the dragon, and Shrek is forced to fight it, only to be flung by its tail right through the roof of the tallest tower. While Donkey keeps the dragon occupied, Shrek meets Princess Fiona for the first time and leaves with her in tow. After they rescue Donkey and escape from the castle, Fiona insists that Shrek take his helmet off, and is repulsed by the fact that Shrek is an ogre. Shrek appears not to care and takes Fiona by force to Farquaad. As nightfall approaches, Fiona demands they stop for the night, but secludes herself in a cave for reasons unknown. That night, Shrek and Donkey bond while stargazing, and Shrek confides in Donkey that he chooses to live alone because most people (except Donkey) prefer to fear and stereotype him rather than try to get to know him. The next day, the trio continue to Duloc and encounter the Merry men, where Fiona reveals her impressive martial arts skills. After the fight, Fiona notices an arrow in Shrek's butt and orders Donkey to find a blue flower with red thorns just to get rid of him. Despite some difficulty, Fiona manages to remove the arrow and they continue their journey. Throughout the rest of the trip back to Farquaad, Fiona warms up to Shrek and Donkey and Shrek begins to fall in love with Fiona. However, when bringing her a flower that evening after stopping to camp at an old mill, Shrek overhears Fiona talking to Donkey about how no one could love an ugly monster. Shrek thinks she's talking about him and enraged and hurt, he goes and brings Farquaad and his knights to take her to his castle. As promised, Shrek gets his swamp back and he is by himself once again. However, Shrek is still not happy, so after an intense argument, he apologizes to Donkey, with the latter convincing Shrek to get Fiona back. They take Dragon (whom Donkey started a relationship with) to Lord Farquaad's palace. Shrek crashes their wedding and confesses to Fiona that he loves her. At first, Fiona tells him that he's too late and prepares to kiss Farquaad. However, the sun begins to go down, and Fiona transforms into an ogre too, surprising Shrek realizes that she was talking about herself back at the windmill instead of him, saying "that explains a lot" in a sheepish manner. However, Farquaad is disgusted with her now and orders her to be imprisoned back at the tower and Shrek to be arrested. As the guards grab them, Shrek starts fighting them off with all his might and manages to summon Donkey and Dragon by whistling. They burst through the stained glass windows of the church and Dragon eats Farquaad, killing him.
Shrek and Fiona kiss, breaking her curse, but permanently turning her into an ogre. Fiona is still unsure about herself, but Shrek assures Fiona he still thinks she's beautiful, and they get married. The story ends with Shrek and Fiona's wedding and going off in an onion carriage on their way to their honeymoon.
Shrek in the Swamp Karaoke Dance Party[]
Right before the honeymoon, Shrek and the others sing karaoke songs about his wedding.
Shrek 4-D[]
Shrek and Fiona are on their honeymoon, together with Donkey. Shrek tries to figure out where to go by following the map, but then a fairy ends up on top of the map after landing on Donkey's face who sneezes and starts flying. Shrek suggests going down a scary and terrifying street populated by spiders, but Donkey is scared and Shrek pranks them with a spider. Suddenly Thelonious appears and kidnaps Fiona, so Shrek and Donkey jump into the onion carriage and chase him through the black forest, dodging feathers, spiders, the gingerbread house and jumping across a ravine when the carriage returns to being an onion and horses in the Three Blind Mice and the two find themselves in a cemetery and start looking for Fiona. They see Lord Farquaad's grave and Donkey has doubts about him, but Shrek is intolerant of this, until Farquaad's ghost appears and Shrek angrily asks them what he did with Fiona, to which Farquaad responds as the widow and brings to life a stone dragon that attacks the duo who run away, only to be saved by Dragon who Donkey called with a whistle and they fly always chased by the Stone Dragon until with a clever tactic, they pass through a small space which breaks the Stone Dragon's wings and falls into the water, while the heroes escape to safety. Shrek and Donkey land on the raft where Fiona is with Thelonious who falls from the waterfall, but they cling to a branch and then fall again and are saved by Dragon who then neutralizes Farquaad's ghost with a spit of fire. Finally, Shrek, Fiona and Donkey arrive at the hotel and thank Donkey, and just as they are about to enjoy their honeymoon all their friends appear.
Shrek 2[]
After a joyful honeymoon, Shrek and Fiona return home to the annoying house-sitter Donkey, urging that they wish to be alone. Later, messengers of Fiona's kingdom "Far Far Away" deliver the invitation from her parents who wish to meet her new husband. Shrek doesn't want to go, understandably concerned over how royalty would react to them both being ogres, but Fiona feels it's important to have her father's blessing.
After a long carriage ride, Shrek and Fiona make their grand appearance in front of the entire kingdom, resulting in everyone being stunned. With some awkward greetings and suggestive angry stares, the meeting moves onto a dinner where Shrek and King Harold fight over dinner about raising children, after Harold belittles Shrek, just for being an ogre. Fiona blames Shrek for everything and she feels the relationship is one-sided since she changed for him and yet he remains unwilling to accept her family or even try to be friends with them, though no fault of his own because he was at least trying to get along with Fiona's parents. She tells Shrek that he should change for her and leaves.
After being threatened by the Fairy Godmother, Harold convinces Shrek and Donkey to meet him on a hunting trail where they can get to know one another. They are then spotted by Puss, who was hired by King Harold to kill Shrek. He attacks Shrek but soon coughs up a hairball and fails. When the misunderstanding is resolved, Puss vows to accompany Shrek to make amends for the mistake. Shrek then uses a card the Fairy Godmother had given him earlier and decides to meet with the Fairy Godmother at her factory for help in mending his relationship with Fiona.
In the factory, the trio is dismissed by the Godmother's bigotry against Ogres having happily ever afters and instead went to search for a beauty potion under the guise as workers. Shrek grabs the potion and the trio escape. While leaving, Shrek reads the potion though Donkey tries it first to see if it is effective. Shrek drinks as well, thinking it doesn't work on donkeys, though the results are the same except with more gas. The trio finds shelter from the rain in a small barn where Donkey and Shrek inexplicably pass out, with the same effects happening to Fiona in Far Far Away when she wanted to leave since her parents, mainly her father, never gave Shrek a chance.
In the morning while the potion activates, Shrek was turned into a handsome human and Donkey into a stallion, greeted by three farmhand girls. In Far Far Away, Fiona surprisingly finds herself back in human form as well but is tricked by Charming into believing that he is Shrek. After being manipulated by the Fairy Godmother, Shrek leaves believing Fiona would be happier with the prince of her dreams until he discovers that the Godmother is Charming's mother and intends to force Fiona to fall in love with him. Shrek, Donkey, and Puss are arrested after being spotted but they are rescued by Gingy and the others after they saw them on TV. To storm the castle, Shrek and Gingy visit the Muffin Man who creates a giant gingerbread man to help in their quest. Shrek and Donkey storm through the castle with Puss fending off the guards.
Later, Shrek, Puss, Donkey, and the other Fairy Tale Creatures battle with the Fairy Godmother, who tells Charming to kiss Fiona. The kiss proves ineffective since Harold didn't spike her tea with the love potion that was intended. Out of rage, the Fairy Godmother strikes at Shrek with her wand, but Harold's inference reflects the magic at her, reducing her to bubbles. It's revealed he is a frog whom the Fairy Godmother had given a happily ever after and gives his blessings to Shrek and Fiona. When the clock strikes midnight, Shrek tells Fiona that if she wishes to stay in their human forms, then a kiss at that moment would make the spell permanent, despite him giving up his joy and lifestyle of being an ogre. Fiona, touched by the lengths Shrek is going through to make her happy, makes him wait until they return to normal, declaring she loves him as the ogre she married. A celebration goes underway with the seemingly dysfunctional family becoming a truly grand one in song and dance.
In Far Far Away Idol, Shrek sings "What I Like About You" with Fiona.
Shrek the Third[]
Shrek and Fiona take on the responsibilities as King and Queen while Fiona's father Harold remained bedridden. After many overwhelming mistakes and disasters, Shrek is ready to give up and leave until a messenger tells them that the Frog King was dying. Despite Harold's confidence in Shrek being a good king, he did mention of another heir named Aurthur and left it to Shrek to do the right thing.
Not wishing to rule a kingdom and rather return to the swamp, Shrek, Donkey, and Puss start heading to search for Arthur with upon their leave Fiona telling Shrek that she is pregnant. Shrek starts to have a nightmare of having too many babies, later, seeing Donkey with a baby ogre's face as the nightmare continues. Shrek admits to Donkey that mostly he's afraid of being a bad parent since ogres aren't generally known for being kind or loving. His relationship with his father probably played a role in his parenting fears. Shrek first finds Artie at his high school, where everyone was bullying him. Shrek starts to make Artie go to Far Far Away, but Artie becomes uneasy by Puss and Donkey's bantering of the royal duties that await him. After being ship-wrecked, Shrek begins to lose his patience with the boy, but in light of Donkey's advice, attempts to communicate with him in the "street". His attempts all fail until it is revealed that Artie's father had abandoned him, which allows Shrek to find kinship with Artie since he too had father-issues with his father. In the morning, Shrek defeats Captain Hook, and the others sent by Charming, then with Merlin's help, return to Far Far Away.
Upon realizing that Artie is the heir, Charming prepares to kill him. To save Artie's life, Shrek stops him and boldly insults the poor boy, stating that he needed some fool to fill the royal job. Shrek becomes disenchanted over hurting Artie's feelings, but keeps his sense of humor until his friends arrive to the rescue with Artie talking the villains into reforming themselves (after Artie realized he should save Shrek and that he didn't mean anything he said to Charming). Artie assumes the role of king and Shrek now feels he is capable of being a father. The last scene shows he is the proud parent of triplets, and though he makes mistakes, proves to be a great dad.
Shrek the Halls[]
Donkey stresses Shrek with the preparations for Christmas, but Shrek doesn't want to know about it, until on Christmas Eve, Fiona shows enthusiasm for it and therefore Shrek must immediately find a solution. He goes to the bookstore before it closes and buys a book on how to decorate everything for Christmas. Shrek does his best to organize Christmas, albeit in a most disgusting way. In the evening when it's time for the Christmas story, all the others arrive and Shrek is quite annoyed. It all ends with the house destroyed and a wet Shrek, enraged, kicks everyone out and fights with Donkey, unable to stand it anymore. Shrek tries to talk to Fiona about everything, but she, disappointed in him, goes to look for the others. Shrek remains at home alone sad for the disaster that technically he created and feeling guilty he goes to look for his friends and with some difficulty he apologizes by saying that it was the first Christmas he ever celebrated, since he didn't have it. never celebrated before. Donkey starts to feel guilty and admits that he too got a little too caught up in Christmas and didn't think about it. Shrek receives a snowball throw and then they explain that there is no obligatory way to celebrate Christmas, you just celebrate it together with friends and family. So, they forgive him and they all return together to Shrek's house in the swamp where now Shrek has already sorted everything out and throws away the book, he took from the library which they no longer need and talks about him as Santa Claus who delivers gifts to his children and Fiona and picking her nose makes the house rotten and smelly. In the end everyone goes out to see Santa Claus flying out and everyone is happy (except Gingy who runs inside terrified because Santa ate his wife).
Scared Shrekless[]
It's Halloween, Shrek teaches his little ones how to scare the inhabitants to get the candy. Farkle and Felicia have already done a good job, while Fergus needs to work harder. Shrek and Fiona notice that the door is open, Shrek doesn't care about this because he thinks only a fool would enter an ogre's house. Donkey, Puss and the others had in mind to scare them with a prank, which fails at all, because Shrek admits that the ogres are the real "kings of Halloween". Donkey makes a bet with Shrek that he will be scared if they tell scary stories all night. While Fiona takes the little ones out for another trick or treat, Shrek says he wants to go to the kingdom of Duloc to tell the stories of the terror, now abandoned and dark, with his friends are a little terrified. Shrek gives Donkey a scare with the carion they liked, but now it terrifies him. They stand in a desolate room in the castle, and after hearing Gingy's stories, Shrek admits that it isn't true because he is still alive. With the story of Donkey and Puss having Pinocchio shoot water at them and get paid, Shrek comments that he thinks this is cheating. Shrek then tells the story of him with him imitating the exorcist and going to look after Pinocchio, as Geppetto has asked them for help with whatever he has and Shrek also refuses to read the book that advises them. When he sees Pinocchio, he begs for him to be an only child. The puppet drives Shrek crazy and turns his head, vomits on him, pulls his ears and kicks him between the legs, while Shrek tries to screw his head, cuts his strings, cuddles him... in the end he throws him out of the window and jiminy comes out of Pinocchio's head and Pinocchio, horrified by this, crushes him. Once the story is over, Pinocchio is very scared by this and says that he has nothing to do with it and that he can ask anyone and Shrek pulls out a cricket that looks like Jiminy and scares Pinocchio who runs away screaming. Doneky says he's the one cheating now. Shrek and Donkey are left alone, with Shrek saying that there is nothing but to wait for Farquaad's ghost since it was technically Doneky who caused his death and now he will punish him. Strange events occur, including a living armor that scares Donkey to death and runs away. In reality, all of this is just a prank that Shrek organized together with Fiona and her children. So, it's official that they are the kings of Halloween and Fiona who still has seven eggs go to have fun throwing them at the seven dwarfs.
Shrek Forever After[]
By the fourth chapter, Shrek's heroism and all he's done for Far Far Away have made humans lose their prejudice over ogres. Shrek is also now treated like a folk hero and celebrity. He also enjoys being a parent, but soon enough, he gets sick of it and starts missing the days where he was a real ogre.
At the triplets' first birthday, he is constantly pestered by fans, villagers and his friends to the point where he lets out a roar of hostility, only for no one to take the outburst seriously and cheer for him. This culminates in him losing his temper and he smashes the birthday cake in anger. When Fiona confronts him, Shrek mourns for his life "when the world made sense". When Fiona asks if this means before he'd rescued her, Shrek cruelly confirms this. A shocked Fiona says that Shrek has "everything", before returning to the party, disappointed in him. Rumpelstiltskin has watched the scene and seizes his chance.
As Shrek walks away, saying he isn't apologizing, he overhears cries for help and lifts the carriage under which Rumpelstiltskin was stuck. The dealer insists on giving Shrek a ride and a meal, where Shrek says he wished he has just one day to feel "like a real ogre again". Rumpelstiltskin immediately gives him a deal, though Shrek is still reluctant to sign, thinking that he couldn't leave his family like that, though he eventually signs.
Shrek initially likes his day, but after seeing wanted posters for Fiona, he rushes to his swamp to find her, though she is nowhere to be found. Shrek is then captured by Rumpelstiltskin's Witches, and when he awakens in a carriage pulled by Donkey. Despite his pleas to be heard out, Donkey ignores him, saying that he doesn't know who he is.
Shrek then brought to Rumpelstiltskin, confronting him over the deal, and escapes with Donkey. Donkey initially is terrified of Shrek, but learns to trust him after seeing him cry. When Donkey smells waffles in the forest, Shrek warns him, but Donkey ignores Shrek's warnings and licks the syrup, and falls into a hole. Shrek follows him and ends up in the Ogre Resistance. Shrek fights with the chief, Cookie to get Donkey back until Fiona arrives. Shrek runs to her, but Fiona kicks him in the face. Shrek then tries to explain, believing their relationship is still existent, but Fiona believes he is crazy and laughs at him.
Shrek then meets an overweight Puss In Boots and tries to explain the situation, but Fiona arrives. Shrek tries to kiss her, but she pulls back, and Shrek leaves her tent. Shrek later tries a different approach to Fiona, arriving when she is fighting fake wooden witches. Fiona thinks he'll get killed during the ambush and, despite Shrek's insistence that he'll be fine, she tries to prove him wrong by playfully fighting him. Puss, watching them, realizes that Shrek really is Fiona's true love, though he decides that he should wait until Fiona realizes this herself.
Puss talks to Shrek about this, where Shrek reveals to Puss that he knows that he is Fiona's true love, and is trying to prove it to her. Puss advises him to tell her when she is alone something only her true love will know. Shrek tries during the ambush, telling Fiona everything about her, and inadvertently letting the Pied Piper to control the ogres, including themselves. Puss and Donkey come to their rescue, and they fall into a river.
Fiona leaves to save her friends, but Shrek insists she kisses him, saying it will fix everything, but since Fiona doesn't truly love yet, it proves ineffective. Fiona then rushes to save her friends, and Shrek mourns for his life, after which Donkey asks that "if [his] life was so perfect, then why did [he] sign it away to Rumpelstiltskin in the first place", where Shrek shouts that he didn't know what he had until it was gone.
Rumpelstiltskin, desperate to capture Shrek, promises the deal of a lifetime to whoever can turn Shrek in. Shrek then turns himself in, telling Rumpelstiltskin that since he turned himself in, he gets the deal of a lifetime. Rumpelstiltskin panics, believing Shrek intends to use to get his old life back, but Shrek instead uses it to free all ogres. However, he has kept Fiona, since she is not "all ogre", meaning she is a princess by day. Meanwhile, the ogres, Puss, and Donkey stay behind the castle, and Donkey mentions that "he and Shrek busted out of that place". The Brogan asks how Donkey replies that it is the same way they're going to bust in.
Rumpelstiltskin then tries to feed Shrek and Fiona to Dragon, thereby destroying any chance of the contract being voided, However, the ogres (who were hidden in the ball) raid the castle. Meanwhile, by helping each other, Shrek and Fiona subdue Dragon and capture Rumpelstiltskin.
As the sun rises, Shrek starts to fade from existence. However, Fiona, who now loves him, kisses him the second before he disappears. Puss then notices Fiona is still in her ogre form, proving the kiss did work, contrary to appearances, and reality is restored to just when Shrek originally lashed out at everyone with his ogre roar. Instead of seeing a bunch of pestering villagers, this time he sees the loving friends and fans he made over the years. When Fiona asks him if he is alright, he hugs his wife and tells her that he's never been better before embracing his children. The film ends as Shrek tells Fiona she is the one who rescued him when they met, and Shrek puts the book on the shelf and joins his friends in a celebration, which ends the film, as every character is making mud angels.
Donkey's Caroling Christmas-tacular[]
Shrek together with his friends, his family and the ogre friends he met in the alternative reality are at Candy Apple (Rumpelstiltksin is also there, but he is always locked in a cage) where Donkey suggests everyone sing one of their Christmas songs and Shrek and all the other orcs sing an orc version of "Jingle Bells". At the end, everyone sings "Fairy Tale Rock" (a fairy tale version of "Jingle Bell Rock") together.
Shrek's Yule Log[]
Christmas evening in Shrek's house where it takes place only with the shot of the lit fireplace. Shrek stops Rumpelstiltksin twice when he wants to put out the fire. Then many others appear.
Thriller Night[]
It's Halloween night and Shrek went to the cinema with Donkey, Fiona and Puss, he is seen leaving sobbing over the film he just saw about yodeling. He comments that he would like to watch horror movies on Halloween, resulting in him saying that the point is "no yodeling" with a bag of popcorn on Doneky's face when he says that zombies don't sing. Donkey starts singing "Thriller Night" and Puss plays the guitar, much to Shrek's annoyance. When a lot of zombies come out, Shrek comments that now it's a real Halloween. But then when Pied Pipper starts playing his Donkey flute, Puss and Fiona become zombies, much to Shrek's horror and everyone attracted by the magic of Pipper's flute starts dancing, with Shrek absolutely not wanting to. Eventually Shrek snatches the flute from Pipper and breaks it in half and clings to a railing in a dizzying state. He then realizes that he is surrounded by all the zombies and there is no escape, but then he wakes up in the theater, having all been a dream, and asks if the film is over, but I tell him that he fell asleep during the commercials and now the yodeling movie begins, much to his horror.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish[]
Shrek makes a short cameo in this movie, set after Shrek Forever After, where he can be seen walking over a bridge in the moonlight with Puss and Donkey in a memory as Puss' life flashes before his eyes when Death wounds him in his first duel with him.
