In the magical cartoon realm of the Moshi World, there live many species of monsters known as the "Moshi Monsters" who live with their pets known as "Moshlings". in its capital city, Monstro City, a many-eyed Moshi film director named Roary Scrawl announced that he will debut with the production of a documentary on the city with his camera-like Moshling, Blinki. a young boastful orange cat-like Moshi named Katsuma who does martial arts aspires to be a superstar actor, and talks Roary into hiring him as the lead role. Katsuma, along with his best friend and neighbour Poppet (a pink dog-like Moshi who likes animals and plants) and her pet pig Mr. Snoodle, visit Roary in a restaurant to discuss plans for the film. Roary tells Katsuma that he is considering Poppet to also star in the film, and have their friends, Furi(a greedy brown yeti-like Moshi), Luvli (a pink angel-berry Moshi), Diavlo (a flying volcano-like Moshi) and Zommer (a zombie-like Moshi), also star in the film with them. Katsuma is jealous, but reluctantly agrees to have them act with him. after the group hear on the news that a Moshi archaeologist named Buster Bumblechops has discovered the legendary Great Moshling Egg, which he intends to display at his museum and hatch it later in the week. Poppet has the idea of including the egg in the documentary, which Katsuma tells Roary, pretending he had the idea first.
deep underground Monstro City, a secret underground crime organisation named the C.L.O.N.C. (the Criminal League Of Naughty Creatures) is keeping track on Katsuma and the Great Moshling Egg. a monstrous criminal mastermind known as Doctor Strangeglove and his sidekick Fishlips hatch an evil plan. Strangeglove was once a Moshi scientist named Lavender Troggs, whose hand was bitten off and eaten by a husky, and he replaced it with a magical glove known as the "Strange Glove", which control of him and turned him into an villainous mad scientist known to the public as "Doctor Strangeglove", the most wanted criminal in the Moshi World. after Strangeglove began working for CLONC, he constructed a factory lair where he mutates all of his kidnapped Moshlings into evil minion creatures known as "Glumps". Strangeglove tells Fishlips his plan to steal the Great Moshling Egg from Bumblechops and mutate it into a gigantic Glump-like monster in order to destroy Monstro City and take rule of the Moshi World. Strangeglove summons his Glumps and they together break into Bumblechops' museum where he steals the egg and vandalises the area.
Roary along with Katsuma, Poppet, Furi, Diavlo, Luvli and Zommer as well as Roary's camera Moshling Blinky arrive at the museum at Bumblechops Manor where they begin filming and broadcasting their documentary. when they arrive, Buster Bumblechops shows them the room where the egg is to be on display, but they are shocked to find the place robbed and vandalised. in the wreckage, they find a suitcase and card which project a hologram of Strangeglove revealing he stole the egg. Strangeglove states that he plans to destroy the egg, unless they find him the ingredients for a formula to mutate the egg, consisting of "Microwavable Oobla-Doobla", the tears of a "Blue Jeepers", and a frozen rainbow diamond. after viewing his message, the group concludes that they must together find the ingredients and get the egg back from Strangeglove.
Bumblechops tells them that they must first travel to the Goombla-Goombla jungle, which they travel via a raft pulled by many miniature flying helicopter Moshlings. they find a jungle village, where they must win a contest of who can stoop lowest in order to win the prize Oobla-Dooblas. Zommer wins, and they win the Oobla-Doobla. while walking further into the jungle, they are captured by an evil clown-like candy-man named Sweet Tooth who is working for Strangeglove, who tries to get them stuck in giant candy balls. but Diavlo manages to break them out, and they just manage to escape after a railway chase out of Sweet Tooth's lair, although Diavlo, Zommer and Luvli are captured by Strangeglove "Scare Force" blimp.
Katsuma, Poppet, Furi, Blinky and Mr Snoodle venture to the town of Jollywood, where the Blue-Jeepers live. they come across humanoid Moshling superstar Robert "Bobby" Sing-Song, who gives them a musical number which Katsuma fails to dance to, causing a Blue-Jeeper to laugh and Poppet manages to store the tears in a jar which she adds to the suitcase. Bobby tells them they can teleport to their next destination if they "Kerfuffle" (a way of teleporting via relaxation in a circle), but Furi accidentally breaks up the circle and instead teleports to the prison cell in the Scare Force blimp. Katsuma, Poppet, Mr Snoodle and Blinky teleport to the snowy Moshi Mountains where they get stuck in a cave after Katsuma accidentally triggers an avalanche and a blizzard begins. Katsuma fails to make fire, and Mr Snoodle and Blinky begin to freeze, which makes Katsuma feel guilty for putting them in this mess. but Poppet encourages him the keep going, which warms the group up with confidence and they find the frozen rainbow crystals after the ice starts to melt.
Katsuma, Poppet, Mr Snoodle and Blinky arrive at the top of the mountain Mount Sillimanjaro where they find Strangeglove and Fishlips in a wooden hut and give him the ingredients for the formula, but Strangeglove refuses to give them the Great Moshling Egg and summons his Glumps to attack. Katsuma manages to use his martial art skills to retrieve the egg and take out the Glumps, but loses it while performing tricks with it to Blinky, and Strangeglove attempts to escape in an elevator. Mr Snoodle jumps into the elevator and attempts to fight Strangeglove, but Strangeglove pushes him out using a trapdoor and seemingly kills him.
Strangeglove manages to escape and capture Katsuma and Poppet using his Scare Force blimp, and flies back to his underground lair. in the lair, he cages them and attempts to put them through torture in a machine called "YOUR DOOM", but Mr Snoodle breaks in, revealing himself to have survived, and breaks them all out. Katsuma, Poppet, Luvli, Furi, Diavlo and Mr Snoodle devise a plan to free all the Moshlings, but the musical lock requires a whistle and Katsuma admits he cannot whistle. Katsuma decides to help Mr Snoodle get to the top of the Glump factory and Snoodle cracks the code, freeing all the Moshlings from the prison atop the machine. Strangeglove summons a Glump army and mixes the ingredients to create the mutation formula, but Katsuma and Snoodle summon the army of escaped Moshlings and scare off the Glump army. Strangeglove activates the mutation button before he escapes, but they save the egg and use the formula to clog up the power of the Scare Force blimp, causing it to overload, lose control, crash, and explode.
after Katsuma, Poppet, Mr Snoodle, Furi, Luvli, Diavlo and Zommer are declared heroes to the Moshi World's public and Roary finishes his documentary, Buster Bumblechops congratulates them by letting them cut the ribbon to the official hatching of the Great Moshling Egg. it is revealed to be Mrs Snoodle, Mr Snoodle's wife, and Katsuma whistles for the first time.
In an epilogue, Katsuma is now living with a female Moshi of his kind. And deep in the Moshi jungles, a temple is shown to contain many more unhatched Moshling eggs.
