- “Our battles quickly got more elaborate. He would win some, I would almost win others! He took the name Metro Man, defender of Metro City (pronounced 'met-traw-city'). I decided to pick something a little more humble; Megamind, incredibly handsome criminal genius and master of all villainy!”
- ―Megamind
Megamind is the titular protagonist of DreamWorks Animation's 2010 feature film of the same name. He starts out as a supervillain, and has always lost to his archenemy Metro Man, but when Metro Man fakes his death, Megamind creates a new hero to battle in his place named Tighten, but Tighten turns out to be evil and kidnaps and tries to kill reporter Roxanne Ritchi (who Megamind had feelings for). Megamind, with the help of his sidekick Minion and the Brainbots, saves Roxanne and Metro City from Tighten and becomes a hero.
Background[]
Development[]
Showboating and dramatic, Megamind is very much a classical villain but far from a competent one. He possesses all the stereotypical villain traits - an evil lair, robotic minions, dark clothes and constant bad puns towards his arch-rival, Metro Man. However his long-term plans never involve killing anyone.
intelligent, bumbling, and egomaniacal. As his name suggests, Megamind possesses an incredible mind. However, his intellect has made him arrogant and self-important. Despite his smarts, Megamind is very awkward and clumsy, and his plans never really seem to take off.
Personality[]
At first, Megamind enjoyed being a supervillain, as this was what was expected of him from most of society. He's grown this way due to being rejected and tormented by his peers throughout most of his childhood, and often got in trouble whenever he tried to fend for himself. As a result, he started to believe that being bad was all he was really good at in life, and became a supervillain.
Despite his intelligence, Megamind is bumbling, egotistical, clumsy, and while making his life dependent on his villain status, had somewhat of a naive idea of what it truly means to be a villain. For example, he plays up his status as a villain as more of a game rather than as an actual battle between good and evil, and believed that actual villainy simply amounts to simple crimes like robberies or vandalizing public property. This his further shown after believing he has finally killed Metro Man, where he realized that without a hero to fight, he also had no purpose in life. Therefore, he created Tighten in order to have someone even out his villainy.
Even as a self-proclaimed supervillain, he still showed a strong aura of morality within himself. Despite all the damage he purposefully caused to Metro City on a daily basis, his intention was never to harm any of the civilians, not even Roxanne Ritchi, who he'd kidnap regularly, or Metro Man, who he only thought to have killed accidentally. Ironically, it has even gotten to the point where the civilians aren't genuinely afraid of him, but instead rejecting him just for what they perceive him to be. He is even disgusted when Tighten refuses to use his powers for good, instead using them for his own personal gain, and requesting Megamind to join in on his evil plans.
After seeing all of the damage that Tighten is causing to Metro City, as well as his plan to kill Roxanne, Megamind suddenly has a change of heart after Metro Man suggests to him to take his place as the city's new hero, and when he finally gives a sincere apology to the Warden, who is actually Minion in disguise.
Minion then distracts Tighten and saves Roxanne while Megamind builds everything he needs to battle Tighten. Megamind then uses his disguise watch to disguise himself as Metro Man and he then saves Roxanne's life after Tighten kicks a bus at her. Megamind successfully intimidates Tighten into leaving Metrocity but he made the mistake of calling it "Metrocity" instead of Metro City which Tighten knows that there is only one person who calls their city Metrocity so he returns and battles Megamind if a quick fight where Tighten easily gains the upper hand. However, after being reminded by Roxanne where the invisible car is, Megamind makes a sprint for it in order to get the defuser gun to remove Tighten's powers. Megamind successfully retrieves the gun and tries to hide from Tighten until it is ready for use. However, Tighten finds Megamind hiding behind a car door and throws him in the air to a near certain death. Megamind then believes that this will be his "last glorious failure" but after seeing a fountain underneath him, he uses his dehydration gun to dehydrate himself into a cube and once he lands in the fountain, he rehydrates himself and grabs the defuser gun which is now ready for use and removes Tighten's powers with it. After this, he and Minion became the new heroes for Metro City and they are seen at the museum as a ceremony for them becoming the official protectors for Metro City just like Metro Man had at the start of the film with Roxanne giving him a kiss on the cheek before the credits roll.
Megamind seems to enjoy acting, as even his initial supervillain status was a more performance, with extravagance and theatricality he believed were needed for the role. He is able to vanish - literally, due to his disguise watch - into different personas, such as when he posed as Hal Stewart's "Space Dad," or when he was able to perfectly emulate Metro Man's charisma and banter, albeit failing just because of a vocal tic he had in certain words. The only time he isn't acting is when in the form of Bernard, as he gets close to Roxanne; his true self is also intelligent and somewhat pompous, but he is also kind, caring, and in reality shy and insecure.
Physical appearances[]
Megamind has blue skin with pink accents at his ears, cheeks and lips, a large head, a very slim body, big emerald green eyes and a black goatee. As a baby, he wore a dark blue onepiece with a light blue bolt on it until he grew older and had to wear a neon orange prison jumpsuit like the other inmates. His regular outfit consists on a black skin-tight leather suit with a blue bolt in the chest, black custom baby seal leather boots, black gloves with spikes and a high-collared black cape with spikes on the shoulder pads. His nightwear consists on dark blue pajamas with biohazard symbols on it and fuzzy bat slippers. He takes Metro Man's white cape with him after finding his secret hideout and is seen wearing it at the end of the movie.
In Megamind: The Button of Doom, he made himself a new superhero suit similar to Metro Man's until Minion convinced him that he didn't need to imitate Metro Man to be the city's new defender and went back to wear his old black suit and cape.
Powers and Abilities[]
- De-Gun: Megamind's primary weapon. Has several settings Decompress, Debilitate, Demoralize, Decoupage, Deregulate, Death Ray, and Destroy.
- Defuser Gun: Megamind created this weapon to give Metro Man's DNA to Hal.
- Invisible Car: Megamind's primary use of transportation.
- Disguise Generator Watch/Holo-Watch: A watch-like device that can (almost completely) change the appearance of whoever uses it, with the sole exception of the eyes, who remain with the same color as their owner's.
- B.I.N.K.E.Y.: A pacifier given to him by his parents before they sent him off to Earth. Megamind also used it as a weapon as he blew up a wall on the prison when he was still a baby, used it as a teether, a torch, and to power the Prototype Dehydration Gun, the laser on Minion's first robot suit and his dodgeball protecting helmet. Over the years of becoming a supervillain and Metro Man's nemesis, didn't use his B.I.N.K.E.Y. anymore after creating more and useful weapons to take over Metro City.
Appearances[]
Megamind[]
Megamind as a baby.
As an infant, Megamind was born on a distant planet with his parents and own species of blue and big-headed aliens. Unfortunately, a giant black hole begin sucking the planet, leaving everyone hopeless to find a way to become safe, forcing the parents to sent their son to Earth for his own safety. The mother gave him his Minion who will look after him, and the father gave him his glowing binky, and told him that he was destined for something great, but Megamind failed to understand the final words as he departs from his parents and set out to find his destiny, but was followed by another infant who was also sent away when his planet was sucking into the black hole too, and their rivalry begin. On their way to Earth, Megamind believed he was going to life a wealthy life, but that passed on to his rival when his spaceship sent Megamind's instead to the Prison of Metro City where he is being taken care of the prisoners and learned what was good in life for him, even about right and wrong, and even had high intellects of building something, including a bike that would help him and the prisoners escape and using his binky as a laser to break down the doors, only to be stopped by the Prison Warden.
A kid Megamind deciding to become a supervillain.
Few years later and still living in the Prison of Metro City, Megamind grew older and was ready to attend School to learn about manners and what would be good for him in his life, only to be encountered by Metro Man who also attended the same school and was adored by all the other students because of his abilities to fly, shoot lasers and his superhuman strength, while the others despised Megamind because of his appearances, with Minion defending him. Megamind tried to fit in with the other kids, by showing them his gadgets with Minion, only for them to end up bad by exploding, and being sent to corner by Metro Man, and never fit in with the others, like in a photo with his classmates and teacher, and being the last one to pick for anything, such as dodgeball, and only had Minion as his only friend. When Megamind learned that he was only good at being bad at many things, so he decided to become the baddest boy of them all, and got himself suspended from the school to pursue his destiny of becoming a supervillain, and fought Metro Man over the years but kept losing to him and ended up behind bars once again.
Megamind in his evil lair.
On the grand opening of the new Metro Man Museum, Megamind who was still in prison received a present from Metro Man, which was actually from Minion, a watch that Warden decided to keep, while Megamind pretends that it was only a regular watch, which would actually scan the Warden to transform him into Megamind, making the other police officers believe that it was Megamind and tasered him and attempts to put him in the real Megamind's cell who takes watch and places it on him to disguise himself as the Warden and leave the prison where Minion who kidnapped reporter Roxanne Ritchi picks him up and takes him back to his evil lair where they hold Roxanne hostage and contacted Metro Man on the grand opening to come and challenge Megamind to rescue Roxanne. Believing that they were in the abounded observatory, only to find it empty, because they were actually in a fake one that the evil lair was kept, and Megamind prepares to have Metro Man destroyed by firing the Death Ray in outer space, but it took a little time for it to warm up because of the sun. While Metro Man tries to escape, he felt weak because of the copper, until the death hits and destroys the observatory with Metro Man in it, and his "skeleton" lands right onto Megamind, leaving the supervillain to believe he had actually won and that "Metrocity" was finally his.
Megamind and Minion celebrating their "victory" against Metro Man.
After the "death" of Metro Man and begging to take over the city for first time, Megamind along with Minion and the Brainbots walked through the streets of Metro City with "Highway to Hell" playing, and encountered all the citizens, the press and the police who surrenders to Megamind after they believed that he had actually destroyed Metro Man, and Megamind gave his speech to everyone. Roxanne wanted to know what Megamind planned to do with all the people and the city, but Megamind was unsure and declared that he would only be ruling over the city leaving all the people shocked. Entering the Mayor's office, Megamind was very impressed by it, and never thought he would have view while looking over the city, believing it was finally his, hoping his parents could see him now. Minion cheers him up, saying that they are guiding him for evil heaven. Once Megamind has taken power over the city and believed Metro Man was finally out of the way, everything that Megamind want could become his, and has no one to stop him while robbing banks and painting, painting the roof of the mayor's office blue, going rampage through the streets and starting a pillow fight with Minion while using bags of cash.
Megamind misses fighting Metro Man.
Even though he won and took over the city, Megamind felt empty and had no purpose of being a villain, even though Minion tries to cheer him, not understanding that he misses when he fought Metro Man and when the city had a hero to defend it. Megamind goes to the museum and talks to the giant statue of Metro Man, realizing that he made horrible mistake of destroying Metro Man, but didn't know would actually work and decided to blow it up, fearing it would bring even more and worse memories, while he noticed Roxanne at the museum, and disguises himself as the museum's curator, Bernard. When Roxanne attempts to comfort "Bernard" over his grieving of Metro Man, he tells him that heroes aren't born, they're made. Megamind finally realized that there's still a way for him have purpose, because Roxanne inspired him, but was unaware that he inspired her of attempting to stop Megamind's evil plans. Once "Bernard" says goodbye to Roxanne and turns back into Megamind, he tells himself that it was time to put the past behind, only the future, but begin to become really scared after the Metro Man Museum explodes right in front of him.
Megamind decides to create a new superhero for Metro City.
Next day, Minion found it confused of learning why Megamind would wanna create a new superhero. It was so Megamind had someone to fight, and so he'd have a purpose. Megamind decided to give someone the powers of Metro Man coming from his dandruff on his cape, training someone to become Metro City's new hero, and then fight in an epic battle of Good and Evil, which would put everything back the way it was before. Once they begin to fuse the powers of Metro Man into a defusing gun, Minion found that this was a bad idea, cause it would cause something terrible. But they soon learned that Roxanne came back, attempting to stop Megamind's evil plan, so Megamind disguises himself as Bernard again, helping Roxanne solve the problems, while attempting to have the Brainbots taking Roxanne. When Roxanne found the defusing gun, Megamind tries to take it from her, but the powers fire right into Roxanne's nerdy camera man, Hal Stewart. Once they escaped the evil lair, Roxanne thanks "Bernard" for his help and hugs him, which shocks Megamind after being hugged by the person whom he often kidnapped. So Megamind and Minion tracked down Hal to his home, where they disguise themselves as Hal's Space Dad and Space Step-Mom, revealing that they came here to guide him to become the new superhero of Metro City and battle Megamind.
Megamind disguised as Bernard dating Roxanne.
Minion didn't find Hal to be very heroic, and the training ends up pretty bad, but it laters becomes successful. Meanwhile, Megamind begins dating Roxanne while disguising himself as Bernard. They went to the library reading books together and tellings jokes, riding bicycles to Roxanne's favorite childhood place with her mother, which became dump, so Megamind decided to clean up the city, lying to Minion that they are not fighting the new hero at a dump, much to Minion's confusion. Megamind also returns all the paintings, much to Roxanne's surprise, while "Bernard" said that Megamind might not be so bad after all. While on a picnic, Roxanne tells "Bernard" that she and Metro Man were never a couple, because he was never really her type. So "Bernard" tells Roxanne that in school, none of the kids really liked him and that he was always last one picked for everything, which disappoints Roxanne that they didn't go to the same school. As Space Dad, Megamind gifts Hal with his superhero suit after his training was complete, and he'll be named "Titan", which he misspells as "Tighten". Megamind was also unaware that Hal had feelings for Roxanne, and tells him that he must save her, so she could accept him.
Megamind is broken up with Roxanne after his identity is exposed.
Despite preparing a new hero to fight, Megamind had actually put everything in the city back and restore it to it's original glory, like opening the banks again and cleaning the city to surprise Roxanne, which makes her become optimistic and confused, believing something happened or that someone tamed Megamind. When Minion was preparing Megamind's new cape for the battle called "The Black Mamba", Megamind learned he was running late for his date with Roxanne, and does not tell Minion, not wanting to expose his feelings for her. However, Minion learned from himself that Megamind has fallen in love with Roxanne and tries to prevent him from going to see her, only for Megamind to tell Minion that he was forgetting his place, but Minion told him that the bad guy doesn't get the girl, which makes Megamind snap believing that he might not want to be the bad guy anymore, and no longer needed Minion, which hunted the latter's feelings, and leaves Megamind on his own. But on his date with Roxanne, his secrets are exposed, and Roxanne breaks up with him, wondering if she would ever wanna be with Megamind for what he had done for the past year before going their separate ways in the rain.
Megamind wearing the Black Mamba.
Realized that Minion was right about everything, while he himself was less right, and that they should stick up to what they're really good at, being bad. While feeling lonely after his fallout with Minion and break up with Roxanne, Megamind orders the Brainbots to bring him the Black Mamba, and he dresses up in it preparing to fight Tighten in a gigantic robot that he controls while moving him arms and legs. Megamind terrorizes the streets playfully and demands to know where Tighten is, while he was just making a joke, cause he'd knew none of them would know what he was talking about. When Megamind waited for his arrival, it's been an hour and there was no sign of Tighten showing up. When Megamind attempts to confront Tighten at his apartment, he becomes shocked that he begin to use his power at a crime spree, reveling that he only did this to become closer to Roxanne, but she rejected him. Megamind becomes shocked and nervous that Tighten was actually in love with Roxanne Ritchi, and that Tighten thought about teaming up with him and rule the city together. When Megamind berates Tighten for his actions, he reveals himself as his Space Dad and Bernard who's dating Roxanne that Hal was earlier jealous of, which angers Tighten and they fought through the streets.
Megamind and Roxanne think of a plan to find Tighten's weakness.
Megamind believed Tighten was fighting him in heroic ways, but started to see him fighting him with more of a violent temper when he throws him into the sky and pushes him to the ground. When Megamind told him to take him to jail now, Megamind thought about sending him to the morgue instead, fearing that Tighten attempts to kill him, and tosses himself out of the robot, and is saved by the Brainbots. Megamind hits the ground and orders the Brainbots to trap Tighten under a giant ball made out of metal, which was the same one that he used to defeat Metro Man. But Tighten breaks free, which shocks and confuses Megamind of why the copper didn't work, and wondered how it "worked" on Metro Man. Once Megamind escapes from Tighten when he throws the giant ball at him to make sure he had finish him off, he learns that the hero he made became evil after he flicks the mayor in the face going under new management, and decided to go to Roxanne asking for her help. Despite his evil doings in the past and getting her to care about him, Roxanne agree to help Megamind find Tighten's weakness before he could destroy the city.
Megamind and Roxanne discover that Metro Man is actually alive.
When Megamind asked Roxanne if Metro Man had a place that would give them a clue to stop Tighten, Roxanne tells him of one place to think of. It was hopeless to take away Tighten's power away, because Megamind lost his fussing gun, after misplacing the invisible car on the night where Roxanne dumped him in the rain, asking if she ever looked back, which she denied. The place they were going to turned out to be Megamind's old school house which became abounded and messy. There was a secret man-cave with all of Metro Man's stuff he won over the years, including the old formal cape, which Megamind places on himself. But when they found a glass of water with ice cubes in it, Megamind found it one of life's great mysteries, believing that it could have been here for a long time, but soon became incredibly shocked and sacred to learn that Metro Man was actually alive. Metro Man decided to tell them the truth that he had always wanted to retire as a superhero, but didn't have a choice, until he learned that he does, and decided to fake his death and use a profit, making everyone believe that he was dead, and later renamed himself as Music Man. Megamind desperately begged Metro Man to help them stop Tighten, but Metro Man told him that it was taken him a long time to find his calling, and it was time for Megamind to find his.
Megamind facing Tighten.
After leaving the hideout, Roxanne stated that they defeat Tighten on their own, but Megamind declines the idea, finding it impossible, because he was the bad guy who did not save the day, fly off into the sunset and doesn't even get the girl of his dreams. Losing hopes of thinking of a plan, Megamind returns to prison, while Roxanne attempts to reason with Tighten to no avail. While sulking in his prison, Megamind saw Tighten on TV talking to him and revealed that he was holding Roxanne hostage on Metro Tower. Roxane tells Megamind that he should not give up, and needs to be the guy who the city needs. Unless he doesn't show up, Tighten will kill Roxanne. Megamind tried to beg Warden to realize him, but the latter refuses to do so for everything he had done and refuses to accept his apology. Megamind felt guilt-ridden for what he did, terrorizing the city countless times, creating a hero who's turned out to be a villain, lied to Roxanne and treated Minion like dirt, and begged the Warden not do make the city or Roxanne pay of his wrongdoings. Then the warden opens the cell, accepting his apology and revealed to be Minion who came to free Megamind out of prison as the two reconciled, they left the prison to go off facing Tighten.
Megamind removes Tighten's powers.
As he arrives to fight Tighten, Megamind has the Brainbots swallow him into a big head figure of himself while rescuing Roxanne from the fallen tower. When Tighten breaks free, he lifts the tower, and throws to Megamind and Roxanne's direction. Megamind loses control of his flying motorcycle and throws Roxanne away to safety while he collapses and fells unconscious. Once "Metro Man" returned to action and chases Tighten off, Roxanne goes off to check on Megamind who turns out to be Minion in a disguise and reveals that Metro Man who was actually Megamind in disguise was the real hero. Megamind as Metro Man grabs Tighten and threatens to punch him in the face unless he stays out of Metro City. When Tighten flees the city in terror, Megamind reveals himself as the people's rescuer, but realized he actually exposed his identity to Tighten after referring Metro City as "Metrosity", as he is the only one who calls the town it. Megamind fights Tighten, until Roxanne notices the Invisible Car, and reveals to Megamind that she did look back at him when she broke up with him, and he should look back now. Megamind saw the invisible car, and managed to get into it, and warms up the defuse gun so he could remove Tighten's powers, until he is thrown into the air by it. Megamind manages to turn himself into an ice cube and lands safely in the water and removes Tighten's powers.
Megamind as the new hero of Metro City.
After the battle, Roxanne is impressed with Megamind's victory and he comforts Minion who has his body broken and tosses him to the fountain to get some swimming and everyone cheer for Megamind's bravery. With Tighten defeated and return to normal after losing his powers, and takes Megamind's place at his prison cell, a redeemed Megamind is hailed a hero of Metro City, wearing Metro Man's old cape on the day where Metro Tower is being rebuild by the Brainbots, and a new statue of himself is placed to the new Megamind Museum where everyone cheers for Megamind for his heroics as the former was no longer a supervillain, but a superhero with Metro Man disgusting himself as a normal stranger watching proudly at his former nemesis realizing that he had it in him. When the Mayor of Metro City announces Megamind as defender of Metro City, he liked the sound of that, finding everyone liking him now. Once everyone celebrate with "Bad" playing, Megamind dances with Roxanne who later kisses him on the cheek, much to his surprise.
Megamind: The Button of Doom[]
Megamind in Megamind: The Button of Doom.
For their first day on the job as the new protectors of Metro City, Megamind and Minion are selling off the gadgets from their evil lair. All their items get sold (except for the Death Ray). As for the De-Gun, it gets sold to a boy named Damien, who then accidentaly dehydrates his motherand turns her into a cube. Megamind tells Damien to soak the cube in water to, but unknown to Megamind, Damien decides not to do it, seeing this as an opportunity to revel in his freedom from his mother. Damien then decides to help his friends dehydrate their parents so that they can do whatever they want in Metro City. After the auction is over, Megamind reveals a suit that contains all of Metro Man's powers, which he will wear to protect Metro City.
Minion finds a seemingly harmless button that had also not had been sold. Not knowing what the button does, Megamind pushes the button, and it reveals a robot called the Mega-Megamind, which Megamind put his evil self in. The robot thinks that Megamind is Metro Man, and starts attacking him. Megamind fights the robot with his new powers, but is defeated. He and Minion hide in the Invisible Car. Megamind decides that they should live in the car from then on, because he programmed the robot to not stop until the hero (and his assistant) is destroyed. Minion reveals that he still kept the Spider Bot, a robot that Megamind wanted to throw away, suggesting that Megamind should try to be a hero his way rather than try to do the job the way Metro Man did it. Megamind plans to lure the Mega Megamind to a spot where the Death Ray can shoot. Minion realizes that he cannot activate the Death Ray because the control buttons were broken. He then tries to find a remote, but Megamind does not remember what the remote looks like, so Minion tries all the remotes. Megamind, trying to hide, eventually is found by the Mega Megamind (because Minion accidentally played rock music on the Spider Bot). Minion finally finds the remote and activates the Death Ray. Megamind and the Spiderbot get off the robot using the robot's shooter just before the robot explodes.
The duo then recover the De-Gun from Damien after catching him and his friends doing some crazy stuff in Downtown as they celebrate dehydrating their parents, and Megamind re-hydrates the parents with a glass of water to ensure that the children will not go unpunished of their actions. The short film ends with Megamind and Minion riding off in the Invisible Car to the city to "patrol heroically".

The Doom Syndicate prepares to launch them, but Megamind stops them. Realizing that he's up to something, they vow to start Metro City themselves. Otherwise, they'll destroy the city. Realizing that he can't defeat the Syndicate alone, Megamind and Roxanne track down Chum in a remodeled diner and tries to get his help. Chum also returns when Megamind tells him that he is indeed his sidekick. Megamind, Chum, Roxanne, and Keiko team up to face the Doom Syndicate, but they fail to stop the launch. Working together, the four friends redirect Metro City safely back to Earth. Afterward, Roxanne is elected the new mayor of Metro City, while Keiko launches a newly designed hero signal, which makes Megamind feel accomplished in his new team.

Trivia[]
