- “Behold, the King of the Koopas!”
- ―Kamek on Bowser's introduction
Kamek is the secondary antagonist of The Super Mario Bros. Movie. He is the powerful Magikoopa, the second-in-command of Bowser’s Army, Bowser’s loyal right-hand servant.
Kamek was first appeared in the 1995 SNES game, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island as the boss enemy and a caretaker of Baby Bowser, and is fought as boss in the Yoshi's Island series and Mario Party DS. Kamek earned his name from the Japanese translation of Magikoopa. He and Kammy Koopa, Bowser's confidant in the Paper Mario series, are often confused with each other, although Kammy is based on Kamek.
Kamek was voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson.
Biography[]
Kamek first appears in the beginning when Bowser invades the Penguin Kingdom. He announces his master Bowser’s approach, and used his magic wand to fling the Penguin King and his soldiers out of the way. He then uses magic to levitate some pieces of ice as stairs for Bowser to use. He is later seen at Bowser’s victory party right by his side as Bowser tells his army his plan of marrying Princess Peach.
While Bowser is singing "Peaches", Kamek interrupts him to inform him about Mario, and how Princess Peach was training him. Bowser then slams the piano's fallboard onto Kamek's hands and forces him to stay still, stating “pain is the best teacher”. Eventually, Luigi is taken to Bowser by two shy guys and a snifit, where Kamek uses his magic to levitate Luigi and hold him hostage in front of Bowser. Once the giant turtle gets the information he needs from Luigi, he slams him onto the ground and orders the shy guys and snifit to imprison him in the dungeon, while Kamek softly chuckles at Luigi's misfortunes. Later, as Bowser was rehearsing his proposal to Princess Peach, Kamek takes on the role of said princess until the Koopa General bursts in to warn both of them that they have intel on what Mario, Princess Peach, Toad, and the Kong Army are up to, resulting in Bowser getting the idea to ambush the Kongs.
Bowser and Kamek are then shown overseeing the Koopa General leading his troops against the Kong Army, and then turning into the blue shell, resulting in Mario and Donkey Kong falling, Princess Peach and Toad retreating and the rest of the Kong Army (including Cranky Kong) getting captured. When Princess Peach and Toad arrive back at the Mushroom Kingdom, with the former rejecting Bowser's proposal after his inevitable arrival, Bowser orders Kamek to use his magic to crush Toad. Unable to free Toad, Princess Peach unwillingly agrees to marry Bowser and the latter makes and hand signal to stop Kamek from using his magic, much to his dissatisfaction, but does so anyways; they then retreat back into the floating castle with the rest of the Koopas, Princess Peach, and Toad.
In the dungeon, Kamek tells the inmates of Bowser's lava prison that they will be sacrificed at the wedding, now that the king's plan is coming to fruition. It shows once again how much joy he takes in doing evil things. At the wedding, he serves as the vicar marrying Bowser and Princess Peach. But before he can finish the first sentence, he is punched in the face by Princess Peach, knocking him out.
He was last seen in Brooklyn during the final fight alongside Bowser while levitating the Super Star with his magic. It is unknown what happened to Kamek afterwards, but it is likely he was presumably defeated by Mario and Luigi when they grabbed the Super Star and became invincible against Bowser and his Koopa army. Another possibility is that he escaped by teleporting back to the Dark Lands or just teleporting somewhere else.
