- “Let me tell you something, Moon. What you got here is an opportunity to make me happy. And when an opportunity like that comes along, you better grab it. You get me?.”
- ―Jimmy Crystal to Buster Moon
Jimmy Crystal is the main antagonist of Universal•Illumination's 2021 animated feature film Sing 2. He is a ruthless Arctic wolf who is the head of Crystal Entertainment, Porsha's father and the boss of Suki Lane who holds auditions for musical shows at his theatre, but it later turns out that if the directors of his shows do not give him what he wants, he is willing to make them pay for disobeying him, to the point of even trying to kill them, including Buster Moon and his friends from Moon Theater in Calatonia.
Background[]
Personality[]
Jimmy Crustal is best described as hard-nosed and overzealous, in which case, will do whatever it takes to make big shows. He is also a tough crowd pleaser as he is never very easy to satisfy, not caring enough to tell who's talented or not. Crystal was also shown to be menacing and threatening when he urges someone to do something quickly. After his daughter was "fired", his personality descends into a sadistic, short-tempered, and unhinged side of his personality. He absolutely hates being made a fool of and anyone objecting to his authority in any way. When he learns that Buster Moon tricked and lied to him, he is justifiably angry, but takes it too far when he tries to drop Buster from the top floor of his building, only stopping to address a media appointment to save face, but continuing to hold a grudge against Buster. He orders his men to find him, when Buster is freed by Suki, so he can dispose of him.
He is also shown to be a rather distant, albeit nepotistic parent, giving his daughter, Porsha, whatever she wants and paying more attention to his job. Even worse, he displayed caring more about his own professional image and reputation than the feelings of his upset daughter, that he blamed her for "getting fired" and how that would make him look to the public (even though Porsha wasn't actually fired and it was only a misunderstanding). He did call out a "good night" to Porsha before going to bed, only to call her a spoiled brat when she didn't respond, immediately thinking she was giving him the silent treatment (because Porsha wasn't there to answer him as she'd left the house without her father knowing), but the fact he didn't even check on her shows Crystal didn't spare a thought to his daughter's feelings or even her well-being.
Crystal is shown to be a classist, by his appreciation for the finer things in life, the extravagance and decor of his office and his home, a not-so-subtle demonstration of showing off his wealth, the aesthetic designs of his media empire as well as his hotel, along with his open mockery of Buster and his friends for their humbler origins. His wealth (and perhaps all his hard work) has given Crystal a massive (and fragile) ego and a dangerous sense of self-entitlement, as he murderously stated to Buster right before his attempt to kill him, "Oh, I can do whatever I want!", and possessing no shame or remorse for his misdeeds or crimes, as he attempted to claim the credit for the show Buster and his friends had performed, only to be humiliated yet again and then arrested by the police.
He becomes more enraged when his daughter, Porsha stood up to him and refused to listen to him during the performance. He begins to lose his sanity and eventually tries to kill Buster again by throwing him off the stage scaffolding to his death. However, he never gave a thought that he inadvertently exposed his actions as well as his true, sadistic personality right in front of the audience who were watching the show, which lead to his arrest.
After his was trapped under the stage and freed by Jerry, Crystal had finally lost his temper when he grabs Buster and attempts to finish him off for the last time as he now did go completely insane as his foolishly told him that he could do whatever he wants. He even became more enraged after Rosita saves Buster's life and Suki now turns on him, like Porsha did, as he does not like being betrayed either by the ones who are nothing compared to him or his job.
Crystal does not like being made look like a fool, such as when he believed Buster fired his daughter, only to see that the whole world could see that he has a talentless loser for a daughter, and becomes fearful and humiliated when he tried to take credit and saw Buster and the gang disappear behind his black.
Physical appearance[]
Jimmy Crystal is an anthropomorphic Arctic wolf who has a snowy white fur. His teeth are shard as he uses his claws that are grey to clean them or polish them while holding Buster Moon in his hand. Crystal is very tall and muscular with thin feet, long pointy tipped ears, long tipped and white furred tail, black nose, and icy blue eyes.
He wears a navy blue business suit, a white collared shirt, different versions of a tie, and black shoes with navy blue ironed pants. His tie includes a regular black color, a magenta one with golden guitar initials on it, and a teal tie which he ends up straightening it. He wears a white shirt underneath, and sometimes he wears black business suit.
When it was time for his bedtime, Crystal wore his black and golden robe with a big "C" on it and also wore his comfy slippers.
Devolpment[]
Jimmy Crystal's development in Sing 2 is a downward spiral into madness and downfall, fueled by his ego and his daughter Porsha's defiance. He becomes increasingly enraged and ruthless after Porsha stands up to him and the show's success undermines his authority. His development culminates in him being arrested for attempted murder after trying to kill Buster Moon on stage, ultimately losing his company and his career.

Trivia[]
- He is the first antagonist of a sequel to a film by Illumination to not have a predecessor, as Mike from the first film was more of an anti-hero than a villain.
- Despite Crystal's intelligence on finding out himself that Buster lied to him and his way of getting around the stage to escape from Buster's friends without a fight, he still gets easily fooled, even by others who really are being honest with him. This proves that Jimmy Crystal is not as smart as he claimed he was. For instance, during the show, he unwisely attempted to throw Buster over the scaffolding in front of a live audience with the cost of his entire career and getting arrested for trying to kill Buster and threatening his friends. He even made himself look like a moron when he tried to save his face and foolishly believed that Buster and his friends would stay and perform in his theatre again despite everything he put them through.
- Crystal is the third animated canine in a feature film to be voiced by Bobby Cannavale, following Frankie the Bulldog from The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature and Spike Bulldog from Tom & Jerry, the latter of which also released in 2021. He is also the first one not to be a bulldog.
- Much like his voice actor Bobby Cannavale, Crystal was born in May 3, 1970 making him still 41 due to floating timelines.
- Crystal's full name is a pun on famous actor and comedian Billy Crystal as both have the same last name.
- Crystal's body structure is somewhat identical to that of Felonious Gru from the Despicable Me franchise.
- Jimmy Crystal could be a dark parallel to Rosita. They're both parents, but different genders. While Rosita is a kind, caring towards her family, Crystal only cares about his reputation and not his own daughter's feelings. In fact, he is unsympathetic to her. If Rosita hadn't been paying attention towards her family in favor of her career, she would've ended up like Crystal. On top of that, Rosita is the one who saved Buster from falling to his death after Crystal's final attempt on his life.
- Jimmy Crystal is also considered a dark parallel to Marcus, representing what kind of father he would've become if he never reconciled with his son Johnny.
