- “You raised a hell of a son, Dom. Time for me to step out from under your shadow. Thanks for showing me the light.”
- ―Jakob to Dom before sacrificing himself.
Jakob Toretto is the secondary antagonist-turned anti-hero of the 2021 film F9 and a major character in its 2023 sequel Fast X. He is the middle child and son of Jack Toretto, and the brother of Dominic and Mia Toretto. After Dom learned of what caused their father's death, he exiled, who became embittered towards his brother. For 28 years, Jakob pushed himself to be faster, smarter, and stronger than Dom, and became a master thief, assassin, and high-performance driver. Though he originally worked for Mr. Nobody, he would go rogue with Otto to steal Project Aries, and battled his brother to get revenge. Jakob eventually shared the truth about their father's death and was accepted back into his family.
Background[]
Jakob Toretto was born around the late 1970s to Jack Toretto and an unnamed mother and was the younger brother to Dominic and the older brother to Mia, making him the middle child. In 1989, Jack was in a race against Kenny Linder, but he died after his car collided with Kenny's car and hit a wall. The Toretto family mourned the loss of Jack, and when Kenny attempted to pay his respects, Jakob ordered him to leave. When Kenny insulted Jakob, Dom arrived and nearly killed Linder with a socket wrench, and was taken to jail.
While Dom was in prison, Jakob became a famous street racer after winning many races but was challenged by his older brother after the latter learned the truth of Jack's death. Dom challenged him that if he won the race, Jakob would have to leave Los Angeles for good, and Dom won the race. Upon his loss, Jakob left town but kept in touch with Mia for some time. Jakob would become bitter towards his older brother due to his exile, and focused for decades on making himself faster, smarter, and stronger than Dom. Toretto would become a master thief, assassin, and a high-performance driver, and would eventually start working for the enigmatic Mr. Nobody. Before the events of the film, Jakob was convinced by his colleague Otto to betray Mr. Nobody to steal Project Aries.

F9[]
At some point, Jakob began working for the Agency under Mr. Nobody but went rogue sometime in 2014 when he was convinced by Otto, the son of a wealthy billionaire, to betray Mr. Nobody and steal Project Aries after he met him. Jakob changed allegiances and helped form an organization with Otto as the financial supplier. Otto sent operatives after the creators of the device, who were subsequently killed, to recover the first half of it. However, the device was already recovered by Han Seoul-Oh, who saved the couple's young daughter Elle Lue, from being killed and subsequently went into hiding with her. In the following years, Jakob kept tabs on Dom and his extended family, and whenever they took down several enemies over the years, it paved way for Jakob to take over their territory.
After devising a plan to steal Project Aries and use it to launch a satellite to take control of the world’s computer systems, Jakob and Otto's agents attacked a plane belonging to Jakob's former employer, Mr. Nobody, that was carrying Mr. Nobody himself and Cipher who had been apprehended by the pair. In addition to that, Mr. Nobody was carrying Project Aries with him. Jakob and Otto extracted Cipher from the plane but were unsuccessful in obtaining Project Aries as Mr. Nobody divided it in two. The plane crashed somewhere in Montequinto, Central America, leaving Mr. Nobody's fate unknown. Mr. Nobody was able to send out an SOS message which was intercepted by Ramsey, who delivered the news to Dom and Letty Ortiz with Tej Parker and Roman Pearce. Jakob and Otto took Cipher to their base of operations and locked her in a glass cage to keep her from interfering with their plan.
Dominic Toretto's Crew travelled to the crash site and were able to find the first half of the device however Jakob and his private army attacked the team. Dom and the team escaped with Project Aries however Jakob was able to steal it from Letty resulting in a chase between Dom and Jakob and the rest of the team. In addition to that, the area was guarded by mercenaries who chased after Dom and Jakob through a field of landmines which they narrowly avoided. Jakob drove his Ford Mustang of a cliff where it was caught by a jet with a large magnet mounted to it, allowing Jakob to escape with the first half of Project Aries.
Jakob returned to Otto’s Base of Operations where he met up with Otto, who was funding the operation. He talked with Cipher who tried to convince Jakob to work with her instead, however Jakob declined, citing that he didn't work for the competition. Cipher and Jakob discussed Jakob's relationship with Dom and she asked Jakob whether he could kill Dom. She then let him know the location of the other half of Project Aries, Edinburgh, and let him know that now that Dom was involved, he had no chance of making it out of this situation alive.
Jakob and Otto attended a party at Hatfield House which was hosted by Otto's wealthy family and Dom showed up with help from Magdalene Shaw, coming face-to-face with Jakob for the first time in 28 years. Otto issued Dom a warning by informing him of how powerful his family is. Dom and Jakob nearly came to blows after Jakob made Dom the same offer Dom made him 28 years prior, telling him to get as far away from his world as possible. Otto arrived with Interpol agents and had Dom apprehended. However, the agents were revealed as paramilitaries led by Leysa and Dom was able to get a gun that had Jakob's biometrics imprinted into it so he was easier to track.
Jakob travelled to Edinburgh to recover the second half of Project Aries. Using an electromagnetic field emitted from a large magnet in the back of a truck, Jakob was able to disrupt security systems and steal the second half. Ramsey, Tej and Roman stole the truck and chased after Otto in his Jaguar XE SV Project 8 whilst Jakob ziplined from building to building but was intercepted by Dom.
Dom threw Jakob into a building and the two fought. The fight continued onto the streets of Edinburgh and on top of busses and trucks. Ramsey threw Otto off the road and Dom tackled Jakob onto the truck driven by Ramsey, and Jakob evaded Dom and stole a Toyota 86 and tried to escape. Ramsey, Dom, Tej and Roman chased after him and Ramsey activated the magnet, apprehending Jakob.
The team kept Jakob captive in a cell in their safe house and Jakob listened to Han's story about how he survived his attack. Otto infiltrated the safe house with his army and freed Jakob and he revealed that he was the rogue agent who betrayed Mr. Nobody. When Dom told Jakob that he didn't deserve to have the Toretto name, Jakob angrily revealed to Dom and Mia what really happened to their father when he died. He revealed that he tampered with the race car because their father told him to, as part of a plan that went horribly wrong. Their father was going to throw the race, as he was in serious debt. Jakob never told the truth because Jack told him to not say anything of it and he promised their father he wouldn't. Jakob and Otto then kidnapped Elle, the key to activating Project Aries, and took the second half of the device.
While Otto launched a satellite into Orbit, Jakob had Elle activate Project Aries and they held her hostage in an armored 16 wheeler whilst driving through the streets of Tbilisi waiting for the satellite uplink to upload.
The truck was intercepted by Dom and his team, minus Tej and Roman who had travelled to outer space to destroy the satellite, and Jakob was double-crossed by Otto who revealed he was now working with Cipher. Jakob realized that Otto and Cipher were his true enemies all along. Jakob fought Otto's right-hand man, Sue and was thrown off the truck but he was saved by Dom and Mia. Jakob used Han's Toyota Supra to escape. However, touched by his siblings’ compassion, he redeemed himself by returning to help Dom and Ramsey gain access to the Armadillo after overhearing them struggling to penetrate or stop it. After Otto was accidentally killed by Cipher, who was flying a jet to attack the team, Dom ricocheted the truck into her jet and blew it up, bringing the battle to an end (though a defeated Cipher escaped once more since she piloted the jet in a simulator back at Otto's base).
Jakob arrived in Dom's Dodge Charger and gave the keys back to Dom. Dom tells Jakob that he was once given a second chance when Brian O'Conner gave him the keys to his Supra and so Dom gave Jakob the keys to his Charger, finally forgiving him for his role in their father's death. Mia promised to keep in touch with Jakob and he left in the Charger to go into hiding from his enemies.
Jakob stayed in hiding for an undetermined amount of time and eventually reconnected with Dom where they established a rendezvous point in Portugal that the team knew to meet at if anything ever went wrong. During his time in hiding, he built a modified 1967 Chevrolet El Camino with canon blasters. After evading his enemies long enough, Jakob came out of hiding and returned to his family, getting a chance to meet his nephew and the rest of the team.
Fast X[]
When Ames has put a bounty on the team's heads, Dom asks Jacob to go to Los Angeles and save Little Bee from the approaching enemies who were chasing him. Jacob arrived in the middle of the ambush and helped Mia stop the enemies before revealing that Dom had sent him to bring Little Bee to Portugal. Mia agreed and sent Little Bee to stay with Jacob until she returned to Brian and her children. Jacob drove Little Bee in his old 1992 Ford Mustang to a gas station in the middle of nowhere, where they changed clothes and made fake passports for trips. On the plane, his fellow flight attendant gave Jacob small bottles of alcohol, and he used them to power a jet engine that was stored in the cargo hold of the plane. After fighting the enemies sent by the Agency, Jacob and Baby Bee escaped from the plane on a jet plane.
After arriving in Portugal, Jacob showed Baby Bee his canon car, and the two of them used it to escape after they were attacked by Dante Reyes' henchmen. They used the canons to destroy enemy vehicles, and when the mechanism jammed, Baby Bee got out to fix it. But before he could get back into the car, Dante kidnapped him. Dom arrived in Portugal after falling out of the plane onto the highway below them, and was able to rescue Little Bee and greet his brother.
When Jacob noticed that there were more and more enemies around, he decided to sacrifice himself to allow Dom and Baby Bee to escape. Thanking Dom for helping him out of the shadows, he blew up his car and hurled it towards the enemy cars, which were all engulfed in flames, killing them and apparently sacrificing himself to save his brother and nephew, much to the horror of Dom and Little B.
