Grandmamah is the overarching protagonist of the 2023 computer-animated fantasy film, Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken. She is Ruby and Sam’s grandmother and Agatha and Brill’s mother.
Biography[]
Grandmamah is an ancient Giant Kraken, the aging Warrior Queen of the Seven Seas, and she’s desperate for a successor. She was heartbroken when Agatha abandoned her and she’s beside herself with happiness when she meets Ruby, who is not only her long-lost granddaughter (and her chance to handle things differently than she did with Agatha), but her only hope in securing a Giant Kraken on the throne to protect the ocean from evil (especially evil mermaids!).
Personality[]
Grandmamah was quite controlling of her daughter Agatha, and was the reason the latter abandoned the Royal Kraken throne after she ended the original War between Mermaids and Krakens, simply to get away from her. She employs the same method again on Ruby to get her to ascend to the throne, which she ultimately rejects due to wanting to live her life as a normal teenager. While she still insists on getting Ruby to ascend to the throne after the issue with Chelsea/Nerissa is dealt with, she allows Agatha to raise Ruby her way without Grandmamah interfering (as in her words: "Mothers know best"), which is implied at the end with Ruby and Agatha taking up the role of Oceanside's protectors.
Additionally, Grandmamah holds her negative opinion about humans due to the fact that humans love the very evil Mermaids and think of the heroic Krakens as shipwrecking monsters, especially in the trailers, and occasionally questions why her daughter and granddaughter seem to have a fondness for them. While the humans of Oceanside eventually start to wisen up a bit once they see Chelsea turn into the fearsome Nerissa and attack the town for real, it wasn't enough to change Grandmamah's opinion of them as a whole, though at least they're now treated more as protectors of the seas.
Nonetheless, she cherishes her family as the movie progresses; when Agatha intends on facing off against her reemerged arch-nemesis Queen Nerissa alone as payback for hurting Ruby, Grandmamah makes a surprise appearance in the surface water battle herself, with the intent of defending her daughter and granddaughter.

Trivia[]
- Her granddaughter Ruby is next in line for the throne, since Agatha renounced her title and left the kingdom.
- She was unaware of Sam’s existence until later on in the film.
- She has more tentacles than Ruby, possibly because she is older.
- She is the only female Gillman who doesn’t live on land. Also, she doesn’t have a blue color scheme like the rest of her family.
- She was initially going to be called just Grandmama.
- Grandmamah is the only Gillman not to be in human form.
- Her real name is never revealed.
- Her husband is never seen or mention in the film, so it's possible that he is deceased, or they are divorced.
- The character was loosely based on Clarisse Renaldi from the 2001 film The Princess Diaries.
- Sally Field, Shirley McLaine, Ellen Burstyn, Carol Burnett, Jamie Lee Curtis, Shelly Long, Meg Ryan, and Gloria Hendry were shortlisted for the role, but the filmmakers choose Jane Fonda for the role as their first and only choice.
