Dominic Toretto. You're about to learn all about fear. You build such a beautiful life. Filled with love and family. I never got that change. You stole that from me. My future, my family. And now, I'm gonna break yours, piece by piece.
―Dante Reyes

Dante Reyes is the the main antagonist of the 2023 film Fast X. He is the leader of Brazil's terrorist forces in Rio de Janeiro which formerly served at his father's local gang, but his whole life changed when the Toretto crew and Hobbs brought down his family's criminal empire and killed Hernan. He is also the foremost archenemy of both Dominic Toretto who stole his father's money, and Luke Hobbs who pulled the trigger on and murdered him.

Background[]

Dante Reyes was born to Hernan Reyes and an unnamed woman in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. According to Dante, Hernan was a "very bad daddy" but still "kind of liked him" and used to spoil him with money, power and freedom from the law. When Dante was young, he started to display sociopathic behavior that landed him juvie, prison and mental institutions, such as cutting off the tongues of those who called him crazy, but his father always bailed him out of trouble and over time, he continued to display such behavior. Eventually, his father brought him into his crime family and made him his right hand enforcer with the promise that one day, he would rule it all.

Personality[]

Dante grew up with issues as he was sent prisons or mental institutions due to his violent and sadistic tendencies. Fortunately, Dante was bailed out every time by his father, Hernan Reyes. However, despite all the times his father bailed him out, Dante admitted that he was a bad man but still liked and cared about him nevertheless as he was devastated when Hernan was killed. Dante enjoys explosions as he'll use anything that blows up towards his enemies. Dante is also proven to be frequently sarcastic and childlike in some instances, often cracking jokes and acting goofy in the midst of intense situations. One example is when he meets up with Dom for the race in Rio.

After Dom with his crew took everything he had such as his family, fortune, and life, Dante became obsessed with revenge on Dom as he spent years watching and observing them as he waited for the right time to strike. Dante would stop at nothing to get what he wants. Despite his twisted personality, Dante had minor respect for Dom as he was impressed with his street racing skills and tactics. He also had some form of friendship with Aimes due to a partnership formed with his father.

Dante is described as "The Devil", when even other villains such as Cipher fear him and his potential of unleashing havoc. He is Dom's archenemy, willing to do whatever is necessary to ruin whatever he's built step by step, before attempting to kill him and his crew.

He has no empathy towards others or any remorse. Described as a sociopathic devil who is obsessed with revenge and not having any points of honor or goodness at all, he is more than willing to nuke the entire globe step by step for ultimate power and destruction, and he doesn't care about lives, except for his life and what he's been through. This shows how egoistic the bloodthirsty tyrant is.

He is also shown to be psychotic and comical, but this doesn't excuse any of his catastrophic actions and his lust for worldwide dominance as he was planning to wipe out many places and wreak much havoc to a point where everyone is a pawn for his endgames. He knows a lot about Dom.

Physical appearances[]

Powers and abilities[]

  • Peak Human Condition: Dante is in very good shape. He is strong enough to drag two adult men, as seen when he confronted Cipher, and he kicked a pipe to make it fall down on Letty Ortiz's path to slow her down. He is very resilient, as he survived having his skull cracked open by Toretto when he knocked his car off the Teodoro Moscoso Bridge, although he was dead for two minutes. He also laughed off getting punched in the face by Toretto.
  • Expert Combatant: Though he normally leaves his henchmen to do his dirty work, Dante proved himself to be skilled in combat, which was demonstrated when he lethally eliminated two members of Cipher's syndicate before confronting Cipher herself. However, he was barely able to hold his own against Dominic, though it should be noted that he was purposefully holding back and even laughed as he was struck in the face.
    • Knife Mastery: Dante's weapon of choice is a pair of knives, which he used to quickly cut down one of Cipher's soldiers.
  • Master Tactician: Dante spent a decade planning to make Toretto suffer. He gained resources and influence, as he researched Cipher's soldiers to extort them into working for him, and he told Toretto that he "owned" Rio. He framed his team as terrorists for the explosion in Rome, isolating him and severing his ties with the Agency. He also came up with a plan to trap Toretto. In Portugal, he cornered Toretto by creating a distraction that would force Dominic to use his car and eventually lose it leaving him and his son surrounded, with bombs prepared to be detonated to kill both of them in the process.
  • Intimidation: Dante has been referred to as "the Devil" by Cipher and he also referred to himself as such when he threatened Luke Hobbs who showed no fear of him.

During the events of Fast Five, Dante is at first seen assisting his father with his plans to turn Rio de Janeiro's local gang into a corrupt and powerful political organization by talking about a partnership with a double agent named Aimes influencing the Agency and eventually becoming its leader along with Tess, who is Mr. Nobody's daughter. He is then told by his father that Dominic Toretto and his team are coming to steal all of Reyes' money in a vault kept in the Rio Police Station, Dante tells Hernan that he will kill Dom and his team, but Hernan tells him that suffering is better than death. After Dom and his team stole the vault, Dante helped his father, their men including Zizi, and many corrupt officers chase after Dom and his allies for stealing their money. He almost gets killed when Dom used the vault to knock Dante's car into the water where he was legally dead for two minutes before surviving. Moments later, his father was defeated by Dom and killed by DSS agent Luke Hobbs.

Dante taking over Cipher's organization.

After the loss of his money and his father, Dante plotted revenge against Dom, his family, his friends and anyone whoever knew him or cared about him. He continued his partnership with Aimes who provided him with security secrets and surveillance on Dom's Team in order to learn everything about them which he continued for 10 years. Dante eventually shows his ambitions and manipulations towards Cipher, turning her entire faction against her and having her men stay behind and attempting to kill her, causing her to crawl on her feet all injured to warn Dom and his crew, attempting to put her differences aside and let them fight Dante with her. Dante is physically seen in Rome, hacking into vehicles including a truck in which he planted a secret bomb, intending to destroy the Vatican and kill as many people as possible, possibly luring Dom and his family towards a trap.

Dom and Letty chase after the truck, and Letty even tries to catch him on a narrow street, failing to do so. He escapes, and Dom manages to push the bomb into a river, but the explosion still causes many deaths. During that fight between sides, the bomb also kills dozens of policemen and slashes a bus in half.

Dante successfully frames Dominic Toretto and his friends for bombing up a small portion of Rome and killing thousands of people at least, if not more, with the help of Aimes who uses the entire CIA against the crew of heroes, causing the entire crew to split up unable to contact each other, and Letty to be taken by Aimes. During a discussion between Aimes and the other CIA lead official Tess, who is Mr. Nobody's daughter and successor, Aimes also hints that Cipher was manipulated by Dante into hacking many super-weapons only for Dante to cause catastrophic events around the world entirely, with the intent of rising to global power or even wiping out any resistance globally for his father, all while gaining personal revenge on Dom. Dante then organizes a dramatic car race against Dom, Isabel and Diogo, plotting to secretly plant a bomb underneath Isabel and Diogo's cars. He, therefore, kills Diogo successfully, although Dom saves Isabel as the two befriend one another.

After Dom is taken by the CIA and their leader Aimes, Isabel is kidnapped by Dante. Dom comes to rescue her on a bridge and Aimes pretends to join his side and help defeat Dante, just to lore him to the endgame's trap that Dante has planned for him and his allies. The heroes successfully rescue Isabel, but Dante bombs up a car with Tess standing close to it, causing her to get injured heavily. Isabel quickly takes her to the hospital to save her life. Aimes pretends to help Dom stop Dante, offering him access to his plane, letting Dom drive a car out of the plane's boot, and then chasing after Dante on the desert highway. While chasing Dante, Dom fights against many terrorists with their vehicles and strong weapons.

Dante manages to kill Jakob Toretto by shooting at his fuel engine and causing his car to explode. He temporarily kidnaps Dom's son Brian during that chase, but when Dom arrives with his car, Brian successfully escapes and jumps into Dom's window. They drive on a bridge ontop of a dam that blocks a river, and under Dante's commands, Aimes shoots at the aircraft which Dom's crew has driven to save the day, possibly killing them all on the spot. Aimes then reveals his true nature as one of Dante's most trusted mercenaries. Dante then detonates the bridge and the dam, causing a flood to unleash upon Dom and his son, possibly killing them both.
