- “Just think, your neighbor, the-the-the grocery store manager, that-that-that-that chicken, right there! Everyone in the city gets a shot at being a star live on my stage!”
- ―Buster Moon
Buster Moon is the protagonist of Universal•Illumination's 2016 animated feature film Sing and its 2021 sequel. He is the owner of the Moon Theater, who wishes to make a success out of his business. Background[]
Personality[]
Buster Moon is truly the optimist; he doesn't know when to quit, and believes in the concept that when you've hit rock bottom, the only way left to go is up.
Buster has a sincere love for show biz, especially theater, after attending his first theatrical performance (his dreams of becoming the first koala bear in space were suddenly toast) when he was only six years old and was inspired to one day own his own theater and make his career in show business as a successful theater producer. He loves his theater and won't give it up without a fight, not only because of his love for theater, but because his father worked so hard for so long to help Buster buy the theater in order to fulfill his son's dream, and Buster keeps the bucket his father used in his car-washing business to make that dream a reality as a cherished memento.
Even when all odds seem to be against Buster, he looks for a silver lining in every cloud, no matter how unlikely or ridiculous, gives it his all, but oftentimes his refusal to quit comes back to haunt him.
Buster's determination to save his theater from being shut down drives Buster to do anything and everything to do so, such as going to extreme lengths to avoid dealing with the bank, illegally siphoning power from a next-door business after his theater's electric bill shuts the power down, and stealing gallons of water from a water tower to set up a unique stage, and lying to his contestants about the $100,000 prize money (which was supposed to be only $1,000). He is cheeky, opportunistic, and even a little pushy.
Physical Appearance[]
Buster Moon is an anthropomorphic koala. He has a gray and white fur, an unbuttoned blue suit jacket covering white shirt and red bowtie, a brown and gold wristwatch, some blue dress pants, a black belt, and some brown shoes. Says "Hahahahaha, ya! Gonna spice things up on stage!" when clapped near or pressed on a hard surface of McDonald's Happy Meal.

Sing[]
When Buster was a child, he wanted to be the first koala astronaut, but this dream changed after his father took him to see the play Epiphany. Young Buster was so amazed by the play, and star Nana Noodleman's performance in particular, he developed a lifelong passion for theater. Thirty years later, Buster buys the theater that staged Epiphany, using money his supportive father saved from his car-washing business; he renames it the Moon Theater.
At start of Sing, the Moon Theater has fallen on hard times, with several shows flopping and Buster accruing considerable debt. As a final effort to restore is theater's popularity, he decides to organize a singing competition, despite the misgivings of his best friend, Eddie Noodleman. Buster scrapes together $1,000 to give the winner, but thanks to an incident involving his assistant Miss Crawly, the flyers are sent proclaiming a $100,000 prize, causing a stir in the city. Ultimately, six acts pass the audition, but after one is injured and a second disbands early, Buster allows Meena, a failed contestant turned stagehand, to join.
To convince Nana Noodleman to provide the remaining $99,000, Buster constructs a glass stage filled with water and bioluminescent squids for an elaborate rehearsal. Unfortunately, it is interrupted by three bear gangsters who were cheated out of money by the contestant Mike; they demand the money in the chest as payment. When Buster stalls, the bear leader smashes the chest with a baseball bat, revealing its contents were less than advertised. Everyone's combined weight combined with the force of the baseball bat causes the stage to crack, flooding the Moon Theater and leading to its collapse.
With the destruction of his beloved theater, Buster completely gives up. He spurns his contestants' encouragement and desire to perform, and resigns himself to a lifetime of car-washing. It is only when hearing Meena sing "Hallelujah" in the Moon Theater ruins that Buster's spirit is restored. He rallies his performers, and together they stage an open-air concert in the ruins. The result is so spectacular it redeems Buster in the eyes of Nana, who purchases the theater property and finances construction of the New Moon Theater. Buster holds a grand opening, which closes Sing.
Sing 2[]
After the events of the first film, Buster sets his sights on making his theater a bigger success so he and his friends head to Redshore city to make his dream reality. After managing to sneak in for an appointment slot with Jimmy Crystal, CEO of Crystal Entertainment, Gunter unexpectedly blurts out a theater play that features rock star Clay Calloway and having rights to his songs, prompting him to immediately change his mind and gives Buster & the gang 3 weeks to put the show up and running, but not before Buster is tolf by him to not make him look bad or he'll "throw [him] off the roof".
Unfortunately, not only does Buster actually know Calloway, but learns from Ash that he's become a recluse since the death of his wife Ruby, determined to let his show go on, Buster sends Miss Crawly to find him, though she does find him, he's become such a recluse that he scares her away. Jimmy later finds out about him, leading him to hold Buster over the edge of the Crystal Tower Hotel threatening Him. However, He Decides to go and fix things and leaves to go get Clay Calloway.
Now scared that his life is on the line, Buster & Ash drive to Calloway's home to try and convince him to play in the show, but when he fails at this, after Ash sings one of his songs to him, Clay decides to go along with it and return to Redshore city with her. Unfortunately after a misunderstanding with Jimmy's daughter Porsha thinking she got fired Jimmy locks Buster in his closet, planning on actually throwing him off the roof later, Jimmy's assistant, Suki frees buster and tells him to run, but after being inspired by Clay's newfound confidence, Moon puts on "Out of This World", with Johnny getting his father and his gang to perform security while Rosita has her husband releases their kids to distract Jimmy's security so they can sneak into the theatre and put on the show.
Just as the show reaches it's grand finale, Jimmy grabs Buster by the neck collar and carries him atop an elevator to finish him off, though Buster assures him that no matter how many times he says it, he'll never be afraid of him anymore. When Jimmy tries to throw him down, Rosita, who had developed a fear of heights, manages to overcome her fear and save Buster from Jimmy’s Breaking Point, before he plummets to the ground. After the show is made a big success, Buster joins the applause by the crowd. Jimmy attempted to take the credit for all of their hard work, But he noticed that they left. Which makes to be humiliated and alone on the stage with the audience laughing at him and get arrested by the cops and the police for his attempted murder and his crimes, much to his assistant Jerry's sadness.
After their "Out of the World" performance, Moon looks back one last time at Redshore city with Porsha & Clay in tow, but is then surprised when Suki catches up and reveals that "The Majestic" a Major theater just as popular as Jimmy's theater loved their show so much that they want them to perform at their theater tonight, with assurance from Clay, Buster happily accepts their offer and they go on to perform it with Nana along for the ride, with Buster happily watching in the VIP section happy that he did indeed made it big time.
