Plot[]
Elly Conway is a reserved writer of spy fiction, who is close to finishing her fifth book about Aubrey Argylle, the main character of the "Argylle" series. While on a train to see her parents, Ruth and Barry, Elly is rescued from an attack by a real spy, Aidan Wylde, who tells her that a sinister group, called the Division, is after her because her novels seem to foretell their plans. Aidan takes Elly to England, hoping that her next chapter will show how to defeat the Division.
In London, they look for a "Masterkey" that would expose the Division that Elly had also mentioned in her novels. Thinking Aidan might want to kill her as well, Elly asks her parents for help. When they show up, Aidan reveals that they are agents of the Division, and he and Elly have to fight them off and escape. Fleeing to France, Aidan and former CIA deputy chief Alfie Solomon reveal that Argylle is not completely made up: Elly is actually agent Rachel Kylle ("Argylle" apparently coming from "R. Kylle"), who was captured and brainwashed by the Division five years ago and made to think that Dr. Margaret Vogeler (Ruth) and Director Ritter (Barry) were her real parents; she put her hidden memories into the novels, with Aidan and Alfie being one of her characters and her cat respectively. With the latest "Argylle" novel, Elly was about to reveal the location of the Masterkey before her identity was exposed.
Aidan and Rachel go to Arabia, where they get the Masterkey but are soon trapped by the Division and knocked out and taken to the Division's ocean base on a boat. Ritter, the Division's leader, reveals that Rachel was actually a double agent and one of their most faithful members, and then offers to question Aidan, shooting him afterwards. She also finds Alfie for them, but reveals that she actually sent him the Masterkey, betraying the Division. Ritter cuts off the transmission and she and a surviving Aidan battle their way through the boat, eventually killing him after Rachel's cat scratches his eyes out. Ruth uses a mental trigger code to turn her "daughter" on Aidan, until she is killed by Keira, a former CIA agent and Rachel and Aidan's comrade who was believed to have died in a mission with Rachel, which she had also written in her novels, along with her supposed death. After that, Alfie finally gets the message and Aidan blows up the Division's ocean liner headquarters.
